Matthew 9 Overview and summary
1. Matthew 9 Overview and summary
2. Matthew 9:1-7 Blasphemy of forgiving sins
3. Matthew 9:8-13 The healthy make a strong case for evil sick time
Matthew 9:12 But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick. [kjv]
ο δε ακουσας ειπεν ου χρειαν εχουσιν οι ισχυοντες ιατρου αλλα οι κακως εχοντες [gnt]
The Latin Vulgate word
"valentibus" ≈ "strong" is used here and is the source of the Latin name "
Valentine" meaning "
strong". From Saint Valentine (there were two of them) comes the holiday known as Saint Valentine's Day.
.
This verse is interesting in that some of the words had different meanings in the Greek.
4. Matthew 9:14-17 Old and new garments and bottles
Matthew 9:16 No man putteth a piece of new cloth unto an old garment, for that which is put in to fill it up taketh from the garment, and the rent is made worse. [kjv]
ουδεις δε επιβαλλει επιβλημα ρακους αγναφου επι ιματιω παλαιω αιρει γαρ το πληρωμα αυτου απο του ιματιου και χειρον σχισμα γινεται [gnt]
9:17 Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved. [kjv]
ουδε βαλλουσιν οινον νεον εις ασκους παλαιους ει δε μηγε ρηγνυνται οι ασκοι και ο οινος εκχειται και οι ασκοι απολλυνται αλλα βαλλουσιν οινον νεον εις ασκους καινους και συντηρουνται [gnt]
One can easily provide the literal physical interpretation of these verses using the literal ideas of "
garments" and "
patches" and "
bottles" (or "
wineskins") and "
wine". What might each represent?
5. Matthew 9:18-31 Healing
6. Matthew 9:32-38 Casting out and harvest workers
7. Matthew 10 Overview and summary
In Matthew 10, Jesus sends the "
disciples", as "
apostles" or "
ones sent", to the "
lost" "
sheep" of Israel. It becomes clear in later verses that the ideas of the message is carefully worded to apply to all times and not just this one mission.
