4. Song: Aude Lang Syne
Scale 3 Scale 4

Aude Lang Syne was written by Robert Burns in 1788 as a Scots poem accompanied by a traditional folk song using a traditional pentatonic (5 note) melody (e.g., black keys in the key of F#). [Windy]

In Scottish, the title is (literally) "old long since" or (figuratively) "long long ago". It is often sung as an ending to something.

It is a traditional song sung at the end of the year on New Year's Eve just as the new year is starting.

In the Roman calendar system, January eventually became is the first month of the year. January is named for the Roman god Janus or, in Latin, "ianvs" or "Ianus". The Roman God Janus has two faces, one looking back and one looking forward.
From the Latin word "ianua" for "door", the Latin word "ianitor" meant "porter" or "doorman" - the gatekeeper. The Latin word "Ianuarius""January" is name for the "ianua""door" since January is the door to the new year. This word appears many times in the Latin Vulgate.

Verse routeostium … [v]

A Latin word for door is "ostium""door". The Latin word "ostarius" for "doorman" became "ustaiarius" in common (vulgar) Latin. Then, through the old French "ussier" we get the Anglo-French "usser" and then the English word "usher" , the doorman who "guards" access to the sheep pen (pews of the sanctuary).

The parents of Saint Nicholas of Myra, Santa Claus, were dedicated Christians who died from a plague (not uncommon in those days) when he was young. They left him a sizable inheritance which he used to glorify the opinion of God through his works.

Nicholas was very generous with giving gifts, mostly without letting the receiver know from where the gift came. His light was Jesus, not himself.

34. King Wenceslas
King Wenceslas was the son of Duke Borivoy of Bohemia during the Middle Ages. Bohemia was an area of southeast Germany - though Germany did not exist at that time.
Bohemia is now part of the Czech Republic. The coat of arms for the Czech Republic contains the "Crown of Wenceslaus". The Czech name is "Václav".

35. Background and music
The song "Good King Wenceslas" was written in 1853 by John Mason Neal, who also translated and wrote "O come, o come Emmanuel".

39. Gideons 3 language New Testament

A popular Gideon Bible has three languages: English, Czech and Slovak.

The Czech and Slovak languages are pretty much mutually intelligible, but are written somewhat differently. This contains three separate New Testaments, Czech, Slovak, and English bound into one volume. The Czech and Slovak languages are pretty much mutually intelligible, but are written somewhat differently. After the Roman Empire fell about 500 A.D., areas such as France, Spain, Russia, and England consolidated into countries within the next 1,000 years. It was not until the 19th century that Italy and Germany became countries. Until then, they were a collection of individual areas.

40. Wenceslas
Wenceslas was raised by his devout Christian grandmother. When his father was killed in a battle, Wenceslas, at the age of 15, rose to the throne in 921 A.D. His twin bother and mother tried to overthrow him but were defeated. Instead of executing his mother and brother, he exiled them.

For years after, Wenceslas put his Christian beliefs into practice, helping his subjects, providing gifts and assistance when needed. He was revered and loved by his subjects. His actions helped keep the spirit of the gift-giving of the original Santa Claus (i.e., the bishop Saint Nicholas) a tradition.

41. Martyr
On his way to prayers in 935 A.D., he was surprised by a familiar voice. Turing around, his brother had returned and his conspirators stabbed Wenceslas to death. According to legend, as he was dying he forgave his brother. His brother converted to Christianity too and helped continue the spirit of Wenceslas.

In 1853 the hymn writer John Mason Neale composed the lyrics for the song based on the story while Thomas Helmore took the melody from a 13th century tune called "Tempus adest floridum", Latin for "The time is near for flowering".

Originally just a Duke, the title of King was later conferred on him.

42. Verse 2
Hither, page, and stand by me.
If thou know it telling:
yonder peasant, who is he?
Where and what his dwelling?

Sire, he lives a good league hence,
underneath the mountain,
right against the forest fence
by Saint Agnes fountain.

43. Verse 3
Bring me flesh, and bring me wine.
Bring me pine logs hither.
Thou and I will see him dine
when we bear the thither.

Page and monarch, forth they went,
forth they went together
through the rude wind's wild lament
and the bitter weather.

44. Verse 4
Sire, the night is darker now,
and the wind blows stronger.
Fails my heart, I know not how.
I can go no longer.

Mark my footsteps my good page,
tread thou in them boldly:
Thou shalt find the winter's rage
freeze thy blood less coldly.

45. Verse 5
In his master's step he trod,
where the snow lay dented.
Heat was in the very sod
which the saint had printed.

Therefore, Christian men, be sure
wealth or rank possessing,
ye who now will bless the poor
shall yourselves find blessing

46. Matthew 17:27 Open mouths

Some churches only allow the part of Jesus they like into their church. The church at Laodicia appears to not want Jesus in their church. Jesus is at the church door knocking.
Might those in this church be too busy "ministering" to others (goats) and not "examining" or "thinking" about the entirety of Jesus (sheep)?

The "hear" in Greek has a connotation of hearing with understanding. The Greek for "voice" is, literally, "light" into the "mind" and can be a play on words with "murders".

54. Oaths hidden in a creed
A prayer is a request. Some prayers include assertions. Some contain political and social change statements (and not requests). In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus says not to make oaths (or creeds). Aristotle explains why.

It is possible for leaders to have their followers (i.e., congregation) recite oaths disguised as a creed. It is worse when those oaths appear to be the opposite of what is stated by Jesus in the Bible. Such deception is similar in spirit to mixing leaven into the bread as in the fourth kingdom parable.

55. John 9:38 Creed
Verse routeJohn 9:38 And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him. [kjv]
Verse routeο δε εφη πιστευω κυριε και προσεκυνησεν αυτω [gnt]
Verse routecredoadoravit … [v]

The English word "crede" comes from the Latin word "credo""I believe, trust" and is a statement of belief. Many religious take a "creed" very seriously and many "creeds" have gone through hundreds or thousands of years of careful scrutiny and reasoning to make sure it is clear to all in all respects.
In the traditional UM (United Methodist) Church, new members, especially young new members, go though an extensive class going through each part of the Apostle's Creed.

Something that is "credible" is something that is "believable".

56. United Methodist Apostle's Creed
Versions: Traditional Ecumenical

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
maker creator of heaven and earth;

And I believe in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord;
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and was buried;
he descended to the dead
On the third day he rose from the dead;
he ascended into heaven,
and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
from thence he shall come and will come again
to judge the quick living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
The "catholic church" means the "universal church" and not the Catholic Church.

58. Oath or creed
Which parts are "oaths" and which parts are "creeds"? Do you see any unnecessary "pride" in these claims? Note the "I am" centered nature of an "oath". God is the great "I am". Does an "oath" with a lot of "I am" give the impression of elevating oneself to the level of God?
