Amos 7:1-17 The hard truth about a rock hard plumb line
1. Amos 1: Introduction
Amos 1:1 The words of Amos, who was among the herdmen of Tekoa, which he saw concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash king of Israel, two years before the earthquake. [kjv]
Amos is one of twelve
minor prophets. Amos wrote about 750 BC, right before
Hosea and
Isaiah, during the reigns of Kings
Jeroboam II of Israel and
Uzziah of Judah.
Amos came as a sheep herder and sycamore fig farmer and not from the religious elite of the time.
Amos preached against the disparity between the rich and poor so his themes of justice are especially popular with pastors with a social and/or political agenda in the current world environment.
2. Amos 7:1
Amos 7:1 Thus hath the Lord GOD shewed unto me; and, behold, he formed grasshoppers in the beginning of the shooting up of the latter growth; and, lo, it was the latter growth after the king's mowings. [kjv]
Thus has the Lord God showed me; and, behold, a swarm of locusts coming from the east; and, behold, one caterpillar, king Gog. [bs3]
To set up the use of the
"plumb line" words an Amos 7:7-8, the verses from the start of chapter 7 are covered.
The
LXX (Septuagint) includes the words for
"King" and
"Gog" as in
"Gog" and "
Magog" which feature prominently in Ezekiel's prophecy of
"Gog" and "
Magog". Did the
LXX add these words or might they have been removed later?
3. Ezekiel 38:2 Gog
Gog appears in an interesting end times prophecy in Ezekiel that appears to talk about the use of
nuclear weapons. Ezekiel 38 is about the attack and defeat while Ezekiel 39 is about the required
cleanup after the battle.
Ezekiel 38:2 Son of man, set thy face against Gog, the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him, [kjv]
Son of man, set your face against Gog, and the land of Magog, Rhos, prince of Mesoch and Thobel, and prophesy against him, [bs3]
Did the
LXX add the name of the "
chief prince" as
"ρως" ≈ "Rhos", the traditional name of
Russia? Or might it have been removed from the
HOT (Hebrew Old Testament)? Another prominent attacker is in the land of Persia or, today, Iran.

4. Ezekiel 38:4-5 Gog
Ezekiel 38:4 And I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws, and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of armour, even a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords: [kjv]
38:5 Persia, Ethiopia, and Libya with them; all of them with shield and helmet: [kjv]

5. Proverbs 30:27 Locusts and commands
Proverbs talks of a delocalized group of
"insects" that are coordinated in their efforts via an otherwise unspecified "
command".
KJV (King James Version):
Proverbs 30:27 The locusts have no king, yet go they forth all of them by bands; [kjv]
The locusts have no king, and yet march orderly at one command. [bs3]
… locust … no kyng… goith out … [wy]
The opposite of the Greek word for "
command" is that of "
follow". Jesus says to "
follow" him,
not be a "
leader" and "
command" in the human organizational (house of sand) sense.
6. Amos 7:1
KJV: Thus hath the Lord GOD shewed unto me; and, behold, he formed grasshoppers in the beginning of the shooting up of the latter growth; and, lo, it was the latter growth after the king's mowings.
Brenton: Thus has the Lord God showed me; and, behold, a swarm of locusts coming from the east; and, behold, one caterpillar, king Gog.
7. Amos 7:2
Amos 7:2 And it came to pass, that when they had made an end of eating the grass of the land, then I said, O Lord GOD, forgive, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small. [kjv]
And it came to pass when he had finished devouring the grass of the land, that I said, Lord God, be merciful; who shall raise up Jacob? for he is small in number. [bs3]
The
LXX uses the ancient Greek word
"ὀλίγος" ≈ "few, little, small" that means "
small in number" or "
few in number".
8. Amos 7:2
KJV: And it came to pass, that when they had made an end of eating the grass of the land, then I said, O Lord GOD, forgive, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small.
Brenton: And it came to pass when he had finished devouring the grass of the land, that I said, Lord God, be merciful; who shall raise up Jacob? for he is small in number.
9. A hot time to harvest - now and later
Matthew 9:37 Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; [kjv]
9:38 Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest. [kjv]
Related English words include "
thermal", "
thermos", "
thermodynamics", etc.
In the
GNT (Greek New Testament), the Greek word for "
harvest" has a double meaning based as a
reflexive (self-referential) relationship. Apparently, the harvest at the end of the age could be warm too (and not global warming). When exactly is the "
harvest"?
10. Amos 7:3-5
Amos 7:3 The LORD repented for this: It shall not be, saith the LORD. [kjv]
Repent, O Lord, for this. And this shall not be, says the Lord. [bs3]
7:4 Thus hath the Lord GOD shewed unto me: and, behold, the Lord GOD called to contend by fire, and it devoured the great deep, and did eat up a part. [kjv]
7:5 Then said I, O Lord GOD, cease, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small. [kjv]
The Greek for
"repent", not in the
LXX, is that of
"thinking after" or
"after thought". This phrase is in
both the
LXX and
HOT.
11. Amos 7:3
KJV: The LORD repented for this: It shall not be, saith the LORD.
Brenton: Repent, O Lord, for this. And this shall not be, says the Lord.
12. Amos 7:4
KJV: Thus hath the Lord GOD shewed unto me: and, behold, the Lord GOD called to contend by fire, and it devoured the great deep, and did eat up a part.
13. Amos 7:5
KJV: Then said I, O Lord GOD, cease, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small.
14. Amos 7:6
Amos 7:6 The LORD repented for this: This also shall not be, saith the Lord GOD. [kjv]
This also shall not be, says the Lord. [bs3]
The Greek for
"repent",
not in the
LXX, is that of
"thinking after" or
"after thought". Did the
LXX remove this? Did the
HOT remove it?
The Greek for "
be" is that of "
coming into being".
15. Amos 7:6
KJV: The LORD repented for this: This also shall not be, saith the Lord GOD.
16. Plumb lines
The English word
"plumb" as in "
plumb line" comes from the Latin word for "
lead" and is the source of the chemical abbreviation "
Pb" for "
lead", element (atomic number)
82.
Note the following.
The words zenith (top) and nadir (bottom) are both of Arabic origin.
A "plumb bob", due to gravity, points to the gravitational center of the earth.
A "plumb bob" is used to construct man-made structures.
One can use a "plumb bob" to build a house on rock or a house on sand.
Discuss: Which is better?
Use a "plumb bob" to build a house.
Build your house on rock rather than on sand.
Which fits Amos better, the metaphor of a "plumb bob" or of a "hard rock"?
17. Amos 7:1-17 The hard truth about a rock hard plumb line
Amos 7:7 Thus he shewed me: and, behold, the Lord stood upon a wall made by a plumbline, with a plumbline in his hand. [kjv]
אנך [he]
Thus the Lord showed me; and behold, he stood upon a wall of adamant, and in his hand was an adamant. [bs3]
The
LXX uses the ancient Greek word
"ἀδάμας" ≈ "adamant, hard metal resembling gold, diamond". It was a
legendary metal of surpassing hardness. In a figurative sense, it could be
an exemplar of stubbornness or intractability Cambridge Greek Lexicon (p. 17). It appears to be a Semitic borrowing adapted by folk etymology (Beekes).
The "
made" is inferred in the
HOT and not present in the
LXX.
The ancient Greek word
"τεῖχος" ≈ "mound, earth works, wall" and, in context, it could be a "
fortified city".
18. Amos 7:7 Wall
Amos 7:7 Thus he shewed me: and, behold, the Lord stood upon a wall made by a plumbline, with a plumbline in his hand. [kjv]
אנך [he]
The ancient Greek word
"τεῖχος" ≈ "mound, earth works, wall" and, in context, it could be a "
fortified city".
Walls can be used to:
☐ keep those outside from getting in
☐ keep those inside from getting out
Some walls have "
gates" that allow going through the "
wall". Which side of the "
gates of Hades" are you on?
19. The Great Wall of China
In ancient times, the Great Wall of China was built as a series of forts and walls to protect the northern borders of China from outside invaders. The Great Wall of China was known as the "
Ramparts of Magog" in ancient times. The purpose of the wall was to protect China from Magog. Magog is part of the Ezekiel 38 and 39 prophecies.
The wall of China did not work very well on numerous occasions. How did the attack by
Genghis Khan (Emperor of the Mongol Empire and China) on Great Wall of China succeed? For reference, this happened about 1200 A.D.
Today, in the security field, there is something known as the "
Great Firewall of China" in reference to information security protection on incoming and outgoing data packets.
20. Amos 7:7 In the hand
Amos 7:7 Thus he shewed me: and, behold, the Lord stood upon a wall made by a plumbline, with a plumbline in his hand. [kjv]
אנך [he]
Which makes more sense?
☐
... stood by a wall made of a plumbline, with a plumbline in his hand.
☐
... stood by a wall of hard rock, with a hard rock in his hand.
Who might be the "
rock"?
21. Christ as the rock
1 Corinthians 10:4 And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ. [kjv]
… spiritali … petra petra … [v]
What does Paul say about the identity of the "
rock"?
In the "
spiritual Rock", Paul appears to be referring to the "
Shekinah glory", a topic for another time.
The Latin word
"spiritali" ≈ "spiritual, spirit".
22. Matthew 21:42 Rock hard evidence of the key stone of the rejected cornerstone
Matthew 21:42 Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes? [kjv]
The "
stone", as in the "
stone the builders rejected", is usually taken to be Jesus.
The verses in Mark 12:10 and Luke 20:17 repeat the same idea.
The ancient Greek word
"γωνία" ≈ "corner, angle". and is the source of the English suffix
"gon" as in "
polygon". A "
triangle" has "
three" "
corners".
23. Hard Rock Cafe
When talking about rock hard evidence, we are not talking about the Hard Rock Cafe - started in 1971 in London and moving to a rock music theme in 1979 (with walls, etc., covered with memorabilia). It was acquired by a Florida-based company in 2007.
Eating at the Hard Rock Cafe is somewhat like eating in a museum. One can walk around and look at all the historical memorabilia - which can be quite interesting.
24. Amos 7:7 Creation joke
Amos 7:7 Thus he shewed me: and, behold, the Lord stood upon a wall made by a plumbline, with a plumbline in his hand. [kjv]
אנך [he]
This verse reminds one of a creation joke about a scientist and God.
Scientist: We do not need you God. We can do anything you can do. Scooping up some dirt, the scientist is about to show God how Adam can be made from dirt.
God: Not so fast. You need to make your own dirt.
Security guru Steve Gibson on how to get a
secure computer.
Step one. Get a bucket of sand. (since you will need to make your secure computer hardware from sand as a first step).
25. Plumb line
*H594 אֲנָך (an-awk') : probably from an unused root meaning to be narrow; according to most a plumb-line, and to others a hook:--plumb-line.
This word is used four times in the
HOT, twice in Amos 7:7 and twice in Amos 7:8.
The people appear to have confidence in their "
wall". This is similar to "
mammon" being a confidence in oneself rather than in God.
26. Matthew 6:24 A wealth of logical ideas on mammon
Matthew 6:24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. [kjv]
The historical usage of
"mammon" in Hebrew is that of a confidence in one's own ability to do things (independent of God). That is a central idea of
humanism. The modern Hebrew definition is that of "
wealth".
The ancient Greek word
"καταφρόνησις" ≈ "hold in contempt, despise". Note that this can be done without the other person knowing. False leaders, false teachers, etc., will show an outward appearance that is
different from their heart on the inside.
There appear to be some logical issues in the translation of what Jesus said. Let us investigate.
27. Amos 7:7
KJV: Thus he shewed me: and, behold, the Lord stood upon a wall made by a plumbline, with a plumbline in his hand.
Brenton: Thus the Lord showed me; and behold, he stood upon a wall of adamant, and in his hand was an adamant.
28. Amos 7:8 Plumb line
Amos 7:8 And the LORD said unto me, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A plumbline. Then said the Lord, Behold, I will set a plumbline in the midst of my people Israel: I will not again pass by them any more: [kjv]
[he]
And the Lord said to me, What see you, Amos? And I said, An adamant. And the Lord said to me, Behold, I appoint an adamant in the midst of my people Israel: I will not pass by them any more. [bs3]
Which is a more reasonable text?
☐
I will set a plumb line in the midst of my people. HOT
☐
I will appoint a hard rock in the midst of my people. LXX
The ancient Greek word
"ἐντείνω" ≈ "stretch" or "
stretch out" and here translated as "
appoint". The ancient Greek word
"εντάστις" ≈ "inscribe inside, place inside".
The Greek for
"pass by" is used by Jesus in the
GNT but translated as "
pass away" in the
KJV.
29. Usage - pass away
Matthew 5:18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. [kjv]
*G3928 *29 παρέρχομαι (par-er'-khom-ahee) : from G3844 and G2064; to come near or aside, i.e. to approach (arrive), go by (or away), (figuratively) perish or neglect, (causative) avert:--come (forth), go, pass (away, by, over), past, transgress.
The Greek word translated as
"pass" or "
pass away" means to
"pass by".
"pass away" means "disappear".
"pass by" means to "travel past".
The Greek word literally means
"come beyond" which is what happens to
"pass by" or
"travel past". The idea of
"passing by" is dependent on a
point of view such as an
inertial reference frame.
30. Amos 7:8 Plumb line
Amos 7:8 And the LORD said unto me, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A plumbline. Then said the Lord, Behold, I will set a plumbline in the midst of my people Israel: I will not again pass by them any more: [kjv]
[he]
What might the "
plumb line" or "
hard rock" be?
☐ The religious hierarchy as a
house built on
sand and
oppressing the people with the yoke of compulsion.
☐ Jesus as the
rock who
frees the people from the yoke of compulsion (unless reestablished by an organization in His name).
It is not clear if what Amos is saying applies to Israel as the Northern Kingdom, Judah as the Southern Kingdom, or to all his people of both kingdoms.
31. Amos 7:8
KJV: And the LORD said unto me, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A plumbline. Then said the Lord, Behold, I will set a plumbline in the midst of my people Israel: I will not again pass by them any more:
Brenton: And the Lord said to me, What see you, Amos? And I said, An adamant. And the Lord said to me, Behold, I appoint an adamant in the midst of my people Israel: I will not pass by them any more.
32. Amos 7:9-11 Joyful high places
Amos 7:9 And the high places of Isaac shall be desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste; and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword. [kjv]
And the joyful altars shall be abolished, and the sacrifices of Israel shall be set aside; and I will rise up against the house of Jeroboam with the sword. [bs3]
7:10 Then Amaziah the priest of Beth–el sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, Amos hath conspired against thee in the midst of the house of Israel: the land is not able to bear all his words. [kjv]
7:11 For thus Amos saith, Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of their own land. [kjv]
These verses complete the
"plumb line" thought. The
LXX calls the "
high places" the "
joyful alters". To whom do those alters bring joy?
33. Joyful high places and Samaria
Amos 7:9 And the high places of Isaac shall be desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste; and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword. [kjv]
John 4:4 And he must needs go through Samaria. [kjv]
4:5 Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. [kjv]
Do the "
high places" relate at all to Samaria and the discussion of Jesus with the woman at the well in John 4?
The name "
Samaria" refers to the city of "
Samaria" which was the capitol of the Northern Kingdom of Israel.
34. John 4:4
KJV: And he must needs go through Samaria.
35. John 4:5
KJV: Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.
36. Amos 7:9
KJV: And the high places of Isaac shall be desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste; and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.
Brenton: And the joyful altars shall be abolished, and the sacrifices of Israel shall be set aside; and I will rise up against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.
37. Amos 7:10
KJV: Then Amaziah the priest of Beth–el sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, Amos hath conspired against thee in the midst of the house of Israel: the land is not able to bear all his words.
38. Amos 7:11
KJV: For thus Amos saith, Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of their own land.
39. Amos 7:12-13
Amos 7:12 Also Amaziah said unto Amos, O thou seer, go, flee thee away into the land of Judah, and there eat bread, and prophesy there: [kjv]
7:13 But prophesy not again any more at Beth–el: for it is the king's chapel, and it is the king's court. [kjv]
40. Amos 7:12
KJV: Also Amaziah said unto Amos, O thou seer, go, flee thee away into the land of Judah, and there eat bread, and prophesy there:
41. Amos 7:13
KJV: But prophesy not again any more at Beth–el: for it is the king's chapel, and it is the king's court.

Amos 7:14 Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet's son; but I was an herdman, and a gatherer of sycomore fruit: [kjv]
Here we get more information on the heredity of Amos as a "
shepherd" and a gatherer of "
sycomore fruit". Some think that word "
herdman" could refer to someone who worked with plants.
The ancient Greek word
"αἰπόλος" ≈ "goat herder" as contrasted with
"βουκόλος" ≈ "cow herder".
"αἴξ" ≈ "goat".
"βοῦς" ≈ "cow".
