|
The ancient Greek word
"κατισχω" ≈ "come to full strength". The
GNT sometimes uses the idea of
"prevail".
- The ancient Greek prefix "κατά" ≈ "down, against".
- The ancient Greek word "ἰσχύς" ≈ "strength, power, might".
The idea of the Greek prefix is that of
"getting down to strength". The English way of saying this is to
"come up to strength".
37. Luke 21:35-36 Come to full strength
Luke 21:35 For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth. [kjv]
21:36 Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man. [kjv]
The Greek for "
snare" is more of a physical trap and not a conceptual one as in "
offend". The ancient Greek word
"σκάνδαλον" ≈ "trap, snare" as in entice, tempt, etc.
The next verse is a different context. The
"accounted worthy" is not is some Greek manuscripts. Instead, it is
"come to full strength". Which meaning makes better sense given the context?
38. Luke 21:35
KJV: For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth.
39. Luke 21:36
KJV: Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.
40. Luke 23:23-24 Decision
Luke 23:23 And they were instant with loud voices, requiring that he might be crucified. And the voices of them and of the chief priests prevailed. [kjv]
23:24 And Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they required. [kjv]
Obviously those voiced
"prevailed" in the modern sense of the word. But did those voices
"come to full strength" as in a
"crescendo" in music? Then Pilate made the decision.
It appears that what Pilate did is translated back into the previous verse. This is like a Monday morning quarterback writing what happened in the game knowing what would happen and putting those ideas into the historical narrative.
41. Luke 23:23
KJV: And they were instant with loud voices, requiring that he might be crucified. And the voices of them and of the chief priests prevailed.
42. Luke 23:24
KJV: And Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they required.
43. Exodus 7:13
Exodus 7:13 And he hardened Pharaoh's heart, that he hearkened not unto them; as the LORD had said. [kjv]
and the heart of Pharao was hardened, and he listened not to them, as the Lord charged them. [bs3]
Pharaoh's "
heart" was
"brought up to full strength" such that he did not "
hearken" or "
listen".
44. Exodus 7:13
KJV: And he hardened Pharaoh's heart, that he hearkened not unto them; as the LORD had said.
Brenton: and the heart of Pharao was hardened, and he listened not to them, as the Lord charged them.
45. Job 18:9
Job 18:9 The gin shall take him by the heel, and the robber shall prevail against him. [kjv]
And let snares come upon him: he shall strengthen those that thirst for his destruction. [bs3]
The
"strengthen" is that of
"bringing up to full strength".
The Middle English word
"gin" ≈ "cleverness, scheme, device, machine". The "
cotton gin" was a "
device" or "
machine" is in an "
engine".
The Old English word
"grin" ≈ "snare, gin, noose".
46. Job 18:9
KJV: The gin shall take him by the heel, and the robber shall prevail against him.
Brenton: And let snares come upon him: he shall strengthen those that thirst for his destruction.
Wycliffe: His foot schal be holdun with a snare; and thirst schal brenne out ayens hym.
47. Psalms 89:21
Psalms 89:21 With whom my hand shall be established: mine arm also shall strengthen him. [kjv]
48. Psalms 89:21
KJV: With whom my hand shall be established: mine arm also shall strengthen him.
49. Isaiah 50:11
Isaiah 50:11 Behold, all ye that kindle a fire, that compass yourselves about with sparks: walk in the light of your fire, and in the sparks that ye have kindled. This shall ye have of mine hand; ye shall lie down in sorrow. [kjv]
Behold, you all kindle a fire, and feed a flame: walk in the light of your fire, and in the flame which you have kindled. This has happened to you for my sake; you° shall lie down in sorrow. [bs3]
To "
kindle" a "
fire" such that it
"compasses" is to bring it
"up to full strength".
It only takes a
spark to get a
fire going,
50. Isaiah 50:11
KJV: Behold, all ye that kindle a fire, that compass yourselves about with sparks: walk in the light of your fire, and in the sparks that ye have kindled. This shall ye have of mine hand; ye shall lie down in sorrow.
Brenton: Behold, you° all kindle a fire, and feed a flame: walk in the light of your fire, and in the flame which you° have kindled. This has happened to you for my sake; you° shall lie down in sorrow.
51. Ezekiel 30:24
Ezekiel 30:24 And I will strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon, and put my sword in his hand: but I will break Pharaoh's arms, and he shall groan before him with the groanings of a deadly wounded man. [kjv]
52. Ezekiel 30:24
KJV: And I will strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon, and put my sword in his hand: but I will break Pharaoh's arms, and he shall groan before him with the groanings of a deadly wounded man.
53. Zechariah 10:12
Zechariah 10:12 And I will strengthen them in the LORD; and they shall walk up and down in his name, saith the LORD. [kjv]
54. Zechariah 10:12
KJV: And I will strengthen them in the LORD; and they shall walk up and down in his name, saith the LORD.
55. Verses
Matthew 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. [kjv]
… ecclesiam … portae inferi … praevalebunt … [v]
Discuss: Do you want to go though the
"gates" of
"hell"? Explain.
56. Amos 9:2 Digging into Hades
57. Longing and heaviness
Philippians 2:26 For he longed after you all, and was full of heaviness, because that ye had heard that he had been sick. [kjv]
Paul's "
southern" roots come through as he says "
you all". Who is "
you"? Who is the "
he"? Can we substitute one of the leadership for "
he" and have the thought still be meaningful? The "
full of" is inferred.
Why did Epaphroditus "
long for" and be
"full of heaviness" for those at Philippi? Might it be because he missed the leadership and atmosphere at Philippi? The Greek for "
sick" has the more general meaning of being "
weak". How can someone else hearing about you make you "
heavy"?
The Greek word for
"full of heaviness" describes Jesus in Matthew and Mark.
58. Sorrowful and amazed
In Matthew and Mark, in the Garden after the Last Supper, while Jesus prays, the same Greek word is used in the sense of Jesus becoming
"heavy".
In Matthew, Jesus is "
sorrowful" and "
heavy".
Matthew 26:37 And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy. [kjv]
Was Jesus "
sorrowful"? The Greek word means "
annoyed" or, in context, "
distressed".
In Mark, Jesus is "
sore amazed" and
"heavy".
Mark 14:33 And he taketh with him Peter and James and John, and began to be sore amazed, and to be very heavy; [kjv]
59. Philippians 2:26 Heaviness
Philippians 2:26 For he longed after you all, and was full of heaviness, because that ye had heard that he had been sick. [kjv]
The ancient Greek word
"αδημονία" ≈ "anxiety, distress". The modern Greek word
"αδημονία" (a-thee-mo-NEE-a) ≈ "impatience, anxiety".
How would you create a sermon around this verse? Who is "
he"? Who is "
you"? Who's on first?
Paul appears to be making many subliminal comments using play-on-words, puns, references to other scripture, etc.
60. Philippians 2:26 Remain in hell
Philippians 2:26 For he longed after you all, and was full of heaviness, because that ye had heard that he had been sick. [kjv]
Let us add the letter "
s", as Greek sigma «
σ», into the word for "
anxiety" or "
distress" and translated in the
KJV (King James Version) as
"full of heaviness".
- "ᾍδης" ≈ "Hades" as a word for "hell".
- "μονή" ≈ "remain, stay" as in a "residence" or "mansion".
- «αδημονων» as "full of heaviness" (a-thee-mo-non).
- «αδης μονων» as "remain in hell" (a-thees-mo-non)
61. Ecclesiastes 8:1
Ecclesiastes 8:1 Who is as the wise man? and who knoweth the interpretation of a thing? a man's wisdom maketh his face to shine, and the boldness of his face shall be changed. [kjv]
Who knows the wise? and who knows the interpretation of a saying? A man's wisdom will lighten his countenance; but a man of shameless countenance will be hated. [bs3]
The ancient Greek word
"ἀναιδής" ≈ "shameless, ruthless".
- "ἀν" ≈ "not" (as a prefix).
- "αἰδώς" ≈ "shame, respect, reverence".
The modern Greek word
"αναιδής" (a-neh-THEES) ≈ "impudent, brash, shameless" .
This word could be used as a play on words with "
Hades" but does not appear to have been used as such in the
LXX.
62. Ecclesiastes 8:1
KJV: Who is as the wise man? and who knoweth the interpretation of a thing? a man's wisdom maketh his face to shine, and the boldness of his face shall be changed.
Brenton: Who knows the wise? and who knows the interpretation of a saying? A man's wisdom will lighten his countenance; but a man of shameless countenance will be hated.
63. Daniel 2:15
Daniel 2:15 He answered and said to Arioch the king's captain, Why is the decree so hasty from the king? Then Arioch made the thing known to Daniel. [kjv]
Chief magistrate of the king, therefore has the preemptory command proceeded from the king? So Arioch made known the matter to Daniel. [bs3]
64. Daniel 2:15
KJV: He answered and said to Arioch the king's captain, Why is the decree so hasty from the king? Then Arioch made the thing known to Daniel.
Brenton: Chief magistrate of the king, therefore has the preemptory command proceeded from the king? So Arioch made known the matter to Daniel.
65. Daniel 8:23
Daniel 8:23 And in the latter time of their kingdom, when the transgressors are come to the full, a king of fierce countenance, and understanding dark sentences, shall stand up. [kjv]
And at the latter time of their kingdom, when their sins are coming to the full, there shall arise a king bold in countenance, and understanding riddles. [bs3]
66. Daniel 8:23
KJV: And in the latter time of their kingdom, when the transgressors are come to the full, a king of fierce countenance, and understanding dark sentences, shall stand up.
Brenton: And at the latter time of their kingdom, when their sins are coming to the full, there shall arise a king bold in countenance, and understanding riddles.
67. Proverbs 30:16
Proverbs 30:16 The grave; and the barren womb; the earth that is not filled with water; and the fire that saith not, It is enough. [kjv]
Note that the
LXX has differences.
- The "grave" is called «αδης» or "hades", named for the Greek god of the underworld. The word "hades" means "unseen".
- In addition to the "earth", the sub-underground world of the dead, «ταρταρυς» is added. The word «ταρταρυς» is also used by Peter in 2 Peter.
- In addition to "fire", "water" is also used (a second time).
68. Proverbs 30:16
KJV: The grave; and the barren womb; the earth that is not filled with water; and the fire that saith not, It is enough.
69. Revelation 20:14
Revelation 20:14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. [kjv]
It gets pretty hot in Texas.
If I owned Texas and Hell, I would rent out Texas and live in Hell. Union General Philip Henry Sheridan (1831-1888).
70. Revelation 20:14
KJV: And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
71. Proverbs 27:20
Proverbs 27:20 Hell and destruction are never full; so the eyes of man are never satisfied. [kjv]
The Greek for
"destruction" is that of those "
many" in the "
wide area" who do not find the "
narrow" "
gate" for the "
few".
72. Proverbs 27:20
KJV: Hell and destruction are never full; so the eyes of man are never satisfied.
73. Verses
Matthew 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. [kjv]
… ecclesiam … portae inferi … praevalebunt … [v]
Discuss: Do you want to go though the
"gates" of
"hell"? Explain.
There are two ways through the
"gates". Which side are you on?
74. Didache: The doctrine of teaching
English: There are two ways, one of life and one of death, and there is a great difference between these two ways. (Holmes, p. 344)
English: Now this is the way of life: First, you shall love God, who made you. Second, you shall love your neighbor as yourself; but whatever you do not wish to happen to you, do not do to another. (Holmes, p. 344)
The two ways appear to be "
God's way" and "
man's way" which can be called
humanism,
socialism, etc.
Deceptions (Satin, etc.):
- 1. Did God really say? (create doubt, nothing bad will happen, etc.)
- 2. You can be as a god! (desire to be great, be a leader, influence people, have a legacy, etc.)
The "
Didache" is a special Greek manuscript knowns as "
The teaching of the twelve apostles". It is a short and early (first century A.D.) manuscript.
Didache [1.2]
The Didache was considered by some early church fathers as scripture but eventually was considered (by most) as highly authoritative but not at the level of scripture.
The very first line of the Didache states that there are two ways, one of life, one of death, and there is a great difference between the two ways. This is a nice top-down backward-chaining way of starting the text. Barnabas makes a similar statement.
75. Barnabas: Two ways
English: … There are two ways of teaching and power, one of light and one of darkness, and there is a great difference between these two ways. (Holmes, p. 433)

This same idea is stated in the opening lines of the Didache.

77. Caught up
1 Thessalonians 4:17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. [kjv]
… rapiemur … [v]
The words of interest here are
"caught up" as in
"rapture". The
"caught up" appears to be related to Acts 1:11.
Acts 1:11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven. [kjv]
Part of this is related to the interesting phrase "
thy kingdom come" in the Lord's Prayer.

Details are left as a future topic.

78. Rapture and toilet paper
One idea many people have about the rapture, much of it from the Left Behind series of books, is that all believers will disappear.
This is similar to the shelves of toilet paper disappearing as a result of panic buying. This leads to the phrase, "
When the roll is called up yonder" from the hymn of the same name.
79. Commutativity
An mathematical (or structures) operation is
commutative if the order of evaluation does not matter.
Commutative:
- 2+3 = 3+2 so addition is commutative.
- 2*3 = 3*2 so multiplication is commutative.
Not commutative:
- 2-3 != 3-2 so subtraction is not commutative.
- 2/3 != 3/2 so division is not commutative.
Note: The
HOV (High Occupancy Lane) is not commutative (it is usually one way) but it can be used to commute.
80. Comforter
And there appears to be a connection or association of Jesus of comforter with the rapture from John 16:7.
John 16:7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. [kjv]
That is, if Jesus needs to leave for the comforter to come, and that condition is
commutative, then Jesus cannot come back until the comforter leaves. If the comforter cannot be taken away, then the resolution of that paradox is that those with the comforter must also be taken away before Jesus comes back.
81. John 16:7
KJV: Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

Wycliffe: But Y seie to you treuthe, it spedith to you, that Y go; for if Y go not forth, the coumfortour schal not come to you; but if Y go forth, Y schal sende hym to you.
Gothic: akei ik sunja izwis qitha: batizo ist izwis ei ik galeithau; unte jabai ik ni galeitha, parakletus ni qimith at izwis; aththan jabai gagga, sandja ina du izwis.
82. Comforter
This connection does not imply nor require that this property is true for all time before and after this period of time (e.g., at the transfiguration).
83. The Holy Ghost as comforter
John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. [kjv]
paracletus … Spiritus Sanctus … [v]
The ancient Greek word
"παράκλητος" ≈ "advocate" as in the Holy Spirit or Holy Ghost. The ancient Greek word
"πνεῦμα" ≈ "air, wind, breath, life, spirit, soul" where the exact meaning depends on context. The Latin word
"spiritus" ≈ "spirit".
The "
all"
"things" is that of "
everything that you need to know" (as you need it).
In
PIE languages, the words "
ghost" and "
guest" are cognate. A "
ghost" or "
guest" can be either friendly or not friendly, as in (cartoon character) Casper the friendly ghost.
84. Matthew 12:26-29 Snatching the raptured goods from the strong man
Matthew 12:29 Or else how can one enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house. [kjv]
The
GNT word for
"spoil" is the ancient Greek word
"ἁρπάζω" ≈ "snatch away, carry off" and may be related to the ancient Greek word
"ἅρπη" ≈ "bird of prey" as a hawk or falcon and which
may be related to the
PIE root for "
reap", "
harvest", "
sickle". This word for
"snatch" is sometimes translated
"rapture" or
"ravenous" as in "
wolves".
The ancient Greek word
"σκευή" ≈ "vessel" as something that is made but can refer to
"people" as in a
"chosen vessel".
[Last Supper, 1 & 2 Thessalonians]
85. Raptures
Do you see the connections in the following?
- Moses, as Jesus, raptured the people from the strong man of the world, the Egyptian Pharaoh, to take them to the promised land of milk and honey in the Exodus or way out.
- Jesus, will rapture his chosen vessels (people) from the strong man of the world, Satan, to take them to the promised land in paradise. Early Christians were called the way.
86. The security of flaming swords
Genesis 3:24 So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life. [kjv]
A key or password provides
passive security to protect a resource.
Active security requires a physical presence of someone or something guarding the resource. Is the security of the "
flaming sword" in Genesis 3:24 "
active", "
passive", both or none of these? Is that "
flaming sword" needed to keep access open, to keep access closed, both of these, none of these, or something else?
87. Matthew 11:12-14 Exploring the Kingdom of Heaven
Matthew 11:12 And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force. [kjv]
It is not clear if what Daniel describes as the
"kingdom" of
"heaven" is related to what Jesus says.
88. Model of the kingdoms and births
John 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he can not see the kingdom of God. [kjv]
1 Kingdoms 1
2 Kingdoms 2
3 Kingdoms 3
4 Kingdoms 4
5 Kingdoms 5
Four parts: "
earth", "
air", "
fire", "
water".
The "
ask", "
seek", "
knock" sequence is part of the "
flame" and "
sword" progression.
89. Details
- Put the Kingdom of God outside of space and time and (since the fall) includes the "tree of life". The creation is inside space and time.
- The "flaming sword" both protects and keeps the way open.
- The "Kingdom of Earth" is for those "of the world".
- The "Kingdom of Heaven" is for those "in the world".
- The "flaming sword" is provided by Jesus who "throws" the "sword". The Holy Spirit provides the "flame".
- Birth#3 is the regeneration or in-processing into the Kingdom of God.
90. Flaming swords
- The (hidden) flaming sword was left to keep open the way to paradise and life.
- The assembly of believers is to be built on the rock of Jesus and not on the sand of man. The gates (there may be one for each person) of Hades (what is not seen) are not at full strength, providing a narrow or strait opening, for which to make one's way along the narrow path and gate, kept open by the (unseen) flaming sword.
How many
"gates" are there?
91. Rock and sand
Build your house on the granite
rock of Jesus and not on the human sand (or stones) of man, Matthew 7:24-27. Sand is a chip off the old block of granite and made in the image of granite.
- Church of believers built on the rock of Christ .
- Church of believers built on the sand of man .
The higher one goes up the human
sand hierarchy or
sand tree, the more the temptation to ignore the foundation of the
rock and to start to "
influence" or "
manipulate" others as "
leaders" for one's own purposes.
To the extent that the Church of believers built on the sand of man helps one do what Jesus wants them to do, it is good. To the extent it does not, it is not good.
Some
birds will make "
stones" (sand on which to build their birdhouse) appear as "
bread". That is, give "
bad" "
gifts" or "
houses" to their "
children".
92. Church and reality
The Church, when built on a sand human hierarchy, is the
master and has the
keys to the kingdom of heaven or kingdom of the air or kingdom of the birds. They can bind and loose in the reality of earth and air as now exists.
The purpose of keys is that of closing something. Why are there multiple keys? Is there a key for each person? Is there a gate for each person? The word key comes from the idea of closing something.
The reality of where we exist appears to be Hades with the unseen flaming sword. For the assembly of believers, the gate to life has been kept open, but just narrowly. At a point in time, Jesus will close that gate and reality as we know it will disappear. A new reality will be created. Only those who made it through the narrow gate will see that reality.
93. 2 Peter 3:9 Make way for repentance
Peter tells us that the Lord is not
"slow" but will delay coming to give all a chance to
"make way" to
"repent" as in an
"after thought". When it happens, it will happen "
quickly".
2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. [kjv]
The ancient Greek word
"βραδύνω" ≈ "make slow, delay" which comes from
"βραδύς" ≈ "slow" and which is the opposite of
"ταχύς" ≈ "quick" which, depending on context, might mean "
soon".
The ancient Greek word
"χωρέω" ≈ "give way, make way". Those described should
"give way" or
"make way" for
"repentance". The Greek word for
"repentance" means, literally, to
"think after" what one is doing.
"Repentance" starts in the mind. There is another Greek word for "
change what you are doing".
94. 2 Peter 3:8-10 Slackness
2 Peter 3:8 But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. [kjv]
3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. [kjv]
3:10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. [kjv]
95. 2 Peter 3:8
KJV: But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
96. 2 Peter 3:9
KJV: The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
97. 2 Peter 3:10
KJV: But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.
98. Observations
Matthew 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. [kjv]
… ecclesiam … portae inferi … praevalebunt … [v]
One hears of some people saying that others will "
go to hell". That is, go through the "
gates of hell" to get to "
hell".
From the above verses and reasoning, it appears that we will all end up in "
hell", so to speak, if we do not get through the narrow "
gate of hell" to "
life". That "
gate" is not yet at "
full strength". It appears that the "
rapture" is the way Jesus has of getting the remaining believers through that "
gate" before it reaches "
full strength" and "
closes".
[Movie: To hell and back, Sheridan quote]
99. Throwing pearls build
1 Gates
2 Gates with ask
3 Gates with sheep-dog
4 Gates with wolf-dog
5 Gates with thrown pearls
6 Gates with swine
This chart build is to summarize Matthew 7.
The end result of giving what is "
holy", control of the group, to a wolf-dog and having white and then gray "
pearls" cast to "
swine" to be trodden down to become black pearls is to divide the group into "
few" and "
some". Only the "
few" who have otherwise ignored the "
wolf" will find and knock on the gate to life and have it opened.
100. 1 Corinthians 15:55 Sting of death
1 Corinthians 15:55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? [kjv]
The sting of the scorpion might be compared to the "
sting of death" referred to by Paul in 1 Corinthians 15:55-56.
When stung by a scorpion, the pain does not happen immediately but is somewhat delayed. Thus the element of delayed surprise. This may be intended in places where there is an after-the-fact wailing and gnashing of teeth.
