4. Seven Churches in Revelation
Verse routeRevelation 1:11 Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea. 5. Revelation 3:7-13 Word play in Philadelphia
Here is a verse in the letter to the church at Philadelphia in the book of Revelation.
Verse routeRevelation 3:10 Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth. [kjv]
Verse routeοτι ετηρησας τον λογον της υπομονης μου καγω σε τηρησω εκ της ωρας του πειρασμου της μελλουσης ερχεσθαι επι της οικουμενης ολης πειρασαι τους κατοικουντας επι της γης [gnt]

In part, since the Greek word translated "from" is "εκ""out", some would claim that the words in Greek are an indication of the rapture. Others would argue that this claim is not valid.

Let us use logic, linguistics, word play, and, of course, the Greek language to investigate.

As is often the case, many want a definitive "yes" or "no" answer. The reality is often just indications of higher or lower probabilities. The bottom line question is this. Does the reality of the answer really matter from an eternal perspective?

6. Revelation 3:7
 All
KJV: And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth;
Greek: και τω αγγελω της εν φιλαδελφεια εκκλησιας γραψον ταδε λεγει ο αγιος ο αληθινος ο εχων την κλειδα του δαβιδ κλειν δαυιδ ο ανοιγων και ουδεις κλειει κλεισει και κλειει κλειων και ουδεις ανοιγει

7. Revelation 3:13 Listen
Verse routeRevelation 3:13 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches. [kjv]
Verse routeο εχων ους ακουσατω τι το πνευμα λεγει ταις εκκλησιαις [gnt]

When Jesus says to "listen" with the "ear", it appears to mean that some play-on-words are used. For these, one must "listen". This word play could be before or after this saying.

8. Revelation 3:13
 All
KJV: He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.
Greek: ο εχων ους ακουσατω τι το πνευμα λεγει ταις εκκλησιαις

9. Revelation 3:7 Philadelphia
Verse routeRevelation 3:7 And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth; [kjv]
Verse routeκαι τω αγγελω της εν φιλαδελφεια εκκλησιας γραψον ταδε λεγει ο αγιος ο αληθινος ο εχων την κλειν δαυιδ ο ανοιγων και ουδεις κλεισει και κλειων και ουδεις ανοιγει [gnt]

The ancient Greek word "φίλος""that which is loved or important, friend" and is the source of the English name "Phillip". The ancient Greek word "ἀδελφός""brother, male sibling" and comes from the Greek word parts that mean, literally, "same womb".

Flag: City of Philadelphia
Putting the two words together, one gets "Philadelphia" as "love of brothers" or "brotherly love", part of the Pennsylvania of the Quaker William Penn.

10. Revelation 3:7

Context"Brotherly love" can be either Christ-based or man-based. One needs to carefully inspect the context of what is said to determine which it is. There could be double meanings such that, in some sense, it applies to both.

11. Revelation 3:7 Holy and true

The Greek translated as "holy" is that of "set apart" or "sanctified". The Greek translated as "true" is that of "reality".

12. Revelation 3:7 Open and shut case

The ancient Greek word "ἀνοίγω""open" and comes from two Greek words. The modern Greek word "ανοίγω" (a-NEE-go) ≈ "open"

13. Revelation 3:7 Open and shut case

The Greek translated as "angel" is that of "messenger". The "to" is inferred from the (dative) "(with respect to) the" "angel" or "messenger"

Horizontal keyThe Greek words for "key" and "close" are closely related. A "key" was used to "shut" something that would otherwise be "open".

14. Church at Philadelphia
Verse routeRevelation 3:7 And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth; [kjv]

Sign: Come in we're open Horizontal key Sign: Sorry we're closed

In Revelation, the "church" at "Philadelphia" has "the" "key" of David. What is "opened" or "closed"? Might it be related to the following?

15. Bottomless pit
Verse routeRevelation 9:1 And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit. [kjv]
Verse routeκαι ο πεμπτος αγγελος εσαλπισεν και ειδον αστερα εκ του ουρανου πεπτωκοτα εις την γην και εδοθη αυτω η κλεις του φρεατος της αβυσσου [gnt]

Verse routeκαι ειδον αγγελον καταβαινοντα εκ του ουρανου εχοντα την κλειν της αβυσσου και αλυσιν μεγαλην επι την χειρα αυτου [gnt]

ClefsThe "key" to the bottomless pit is singular, not plural, in two verses in Revelation. The Latin word "clavis""key" is the source of the English musical term "clef".

16. Word play
Word play, by definition, is using words that sound like other words to convey some point. Often the point is humor in the form of puns. Some people consider word play using puns as punishment. This statement itself is a play on words.
shake a tower take a shower
runny babbit bunny rabbit
fighting a liar lighting a fire
For example, a Spoonerism, named for William Spooner (1844-1930), switches letters of words.
Word play, or play on words, is an important way to communicate. Paul uses it. Jesus uses it often in the Greek. Yes, almost everyone in the Eastern Mediterranean area, for over 350 years, had grown up learning Greek as well as their native language.

Play on words in Greek was done in ancient times.

17. Word play in ancient Greece
Book: Humor in ancient Greece Author: Konstantinos Plevris

The ancient Greek word "γέλως""laugh". The modern Greek word "γέλως" (Y-los) ≈ "laughing".

An interesting book on word play in ancient Greece is Ο ΓΕΛΩΣ ΣΤΗΝ ΑΡΧΑΙΑΝ ΕΛΛΑΔΑ (Laugher in Ancient Greece) by Κωνσταντινος Πλευρης (Konstantinos Plevris). This author has some outspoken and/or controversial views on some subjects but has done a lot of interesting and useful research on Greek history, language, etc.

Verse routeLuke 6:21 Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh. [kjv]
Verse routeμακαριοι οι πεινωντες νυν οτι χορτασθησεσθε μακαριοι οι κλαιοντες νυν οτι γελασετε [gnt]

18. Ecclesiastes 3:4 Time to weep and laugh
Verse routeEcclesiastes 3:4 A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; [kjv]
Verse routeκαιρος του κλαυσαι και καιρος του γελασαι καιρος του κοψασθαι και καιρος του ορχησασθαι [lxx]

The ancient Greek word "γέλως""laugh". The modern Greek word "γέλως" (Y-los) ≈ "laughing".

The Greek word used here for "dance" is the source of the English word "orchestra".

19. Word play
Word play example: I couldn't figure out why the baseball kept getting larger, and larger, and larger. Then it hit me!

Word play example: When drawing triangles, there are three points to keep in mind. Someone who does not get the word play might ask, "Well, what are they?".
Many people are annoyed by word play. Word play does not need to follow grammar or spelling rules. It is often used to convey added meaning in addition to the otherwise obvious meaning of the words used.

Note that a play on words is not using the same root word to mean the same thing in different places. That is just normal word usage.

Are there any indications that we should be looking for word play in the verses in the letter to Philadelphia? In each verse possible play on words will be identified.

20. Word play in the GNT
Many word plays in the GNT (Greek New Testament) have some interesting characteristics. For example, in the fourth kingdom parable in Matthew 13, the not usual "measures three" allows for a number of play on words while "three measures" does not. In addition, the "measures" needs to be a certain not usual measure.

21. Hearing ears in Matthew
Verse routeMatthew 11:15 He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. [kjv]
Verse route13:9 Who hath ears to hear, let him hear. [kjv]
Verse route13:16 But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear. [kjv]
Verse route13:43 Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear. [kjv]

Some say that these verses mean that we are to hear and understand the written words when spoken. Jesus uses the same idea in Revelation where there are play on words (with added meaning) that one needs to hear to understand.

The phrase "Lend me an ear" does not mean that you should cut off your ear and give it to me.

22. Matthew 11:15

KJV: He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
Greek: ο εχων ωτα ακουειν ακουετω

Greek: τοτε οι δικαιοι εκλαμψουσιν ως ο ηλιος εν τη βασιλεια του πατρος αυτων ο εχων ωτα ακουειν ακουετω

26. Matthew 13:33 Play on words
Verse routeMatthew 13:33 Another parable spake he unto them; The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven, which a woman took, and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened. [kjv]
Verse routeαλλην παραβολην ελαλησεν αυτοις ομοια εστιν η βασιλεια των ουρανων ζυμη ην λαβουσα γυνη ενεκρυψεν εις αλευρου σατα τρια εως ου εζυμωθη ολον [gnt]

Here are some play on word possibilities for (less usual) "measures" "three" where the allusions meld together and need not be exact. These do not work for the (more usual) "three" "measures".

Can you think of ways that these allusions might be "encrypted" in the "wheat" or "meal"?

☐ Greek: σατα τρια (sata tria) as "measures three" (as written)
☐ Greek: σαταν τρια (satan tria) as "satan three"
☐ Greek: σαταρίς τρια (sataris tria) as "woman's headress three"
☐ Greek: στατηρα τρια (statira tria) as "temple tax coin three"
☐ Greek: στατηρα (statira) as "temple tax coin"
The Greek for "wheat" or "meal" appears to be a play on word allusion to "freedom".

The word translated as "before" is the ancient Greek word "ἐνώπιος""face to face" and comes from two Greek words. More literally, it is "eye to eye" rather than "face to face". The English phase "in your face" might be appropriate here.

Warning Warning
What might "which say they are Jews, and are not" mean?
In any case, this group "lies". The ancient Greek word "ψευδής""lying, false, untrue". An interesting "paradox" is the "liar paradox".or "Russell Paradox".

Greek: λεγω δε υμιν οτι πολλοι απο ανατολων και δυσμων ηξουσιν και ανακλιθησονται μετα αβρααμ και ισαακ και ιακωβ εν τη βασιλεια των ουρανων

49. Revelation 3:9 Synagogue
Verse routeRevelation 3:9 Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee. [kjv]
Verse routeιδου διδω εκ της συναγωγης του σατανα των λεγοντων εαυτους ιουδαιους ειναι και ουκ εισιν αλλα ψευδονται ιδου ποιησω αυτους ινα ηξουσιν και προσκυνησουσιν ενωπιον των ποδων σου και γνωσιν οτι εγω ηγαπησα σε [gnt]

The ancient Greek word "συναγωγή""gathering" as in a "synagogue" and can be a play on words with the three constituent words "together", "lead, bring, go" and "earth". Discuss:

50. Revelation 3:9 In order that
Verse routeRevelation 3:9 Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee. [kjv]
Verse routeιδου διδω εκ της συναγωγης του σατανα των λεγοντων εαυτους ιουδαιους ειναι και ουκ εισιν αλλα ψευδονται ιδου ποιησω αυτους ινα ηξουσιν και προσκυνησουσιν ενωπιον των ποδων σου και γνωσιν οτι εγω ηγαπησα σε [gnt]

The ancient Greek word "ἵνα""in order that, so that" .

It is hard to see where this word has been translated.

English (Greek word order): ... lie. Behold, I make them in order that they will come and worship ...

51. Strongs - verb know

52. Usage - verb know
*G1097 *217 γινώσκω (ghin-oce'-ko) : a prolonged form of a primary verb; to "know" (absolutely) in a great variety of applications and with many implications (as follow, with others not thus clearly expressed):--allow, be aware (of), feel, (have) know(-ledge), perceived, be resolved, can speak, be sure, understand.

53. Strongs - noun know

54. Usage - noun know
*G1108 *29 γνῶσις (gno'-sis) : from G1097; knowing (the act), i.e. (by implication) knowledge:--knowledge, science.
Word usage per chapter Words: γνωσει=8 γνωσεως=12 γνωσιν=6 γνωσις=3

55. Revelation 3:9 Knowledge

The ancient Greek word "γνωσιν""knowledge" and is translated that way in other places in the GNT. For some reason, it was decided to make it a verb instead of a noun. To be a noun, a different parse is needed and the verb then used changes the meaning of the verse.

56. Revelation 3:9 To know knowledge

Paraphrase: Look, I give out of the synagogue [going together on the earth] of Satan of you, which say they are Jews and are not but lie. Look, I will make them such that they come [lack of restraint] and worship [towards the tent/nest be] face to face of/with the feet (fish) of you (church) and (make them such that they come to the) knowledge that I have loved you (church).

Remember that they have been called "liars". Are there churches that provide their "fish" or "feet" with (false as in lying) "knowledge" that Jesus "loves" them (regardless of what they do)? Would Satan desire this?

Might this be a warning for certain types of churches?

57. Revelation 3:10
 All
KJV: Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.
Greek: οτι ετηρησας τον λογον της υπομονης μου καγω σε τηρησω εκ της ωρας του πειρασμου της μελλουσης ερχεσθαι επι της οικουμενης ολης πειρασαι τους κατοικουντας επι της γης

58. Revelation 3:10 Examinations

The key words in this verse are the related words "temptation" and "try". In the Greek, this is an "examination" with what you know or believe to be try in an attempt to "deceive".

To be "kept" "out" of the (consequences of the) "hour" of "examination" one must understand the "reasoning" or "word" without being "deceived". If you show that you understand the "examination", you will pass the "examination" either way. Thus, the important information here is that the "world" will be "examined". As such, this verse is somewhat of a "tautology". Paul does a lot of this.

Information sign More: Do not mention temptations nor attempt to be a pirate

59. Peirastic
Book: Aristotle on False ReasoningOn page 2, Schreiber elaborates on "peirastic" reasoning as distinguished by Aristotle.
Aristotle's clarification of the word fits the "temptations" of Jesus in the Gospels. The ancient Greek word "πειράζω""examine" and is often translated in the KJV (King James Version) as "tempt". The modern idea of the Greek "temptation" is that of an interview where one examines someone about things they know or believe they know.

60. Review of temptations and evil

Verse routeτοτε ο ιησους ανηχθη εις την ερημον υπο του πνευματος πειρασθηναι υπο του διαβολου [gnt]

Verse route6:13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: … [kjv]
Verse routeκαι μη εισενεγκης ημας εις πειρασμον αλλα ρυσαι ημας απο του πονηρου [gnt]

Paraphrase: Do not be deceived by ideas/beliefs that you already think you understand. Help us move/flow from being oppressed by others or oppressing others or oppressing ourselves with toils (based on those deceptions).

61. Reminders about deceptions
Verse route2 Thessalonians 2:5 Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things? [kjv]
Verse routeου μνημονευετε οτι ετι ων προς υμας ταυτα ελεγον υμιν [gnt]

Jesus said something similar, using different words, when talking about deception.

Verse routeη πως δυναται τις εισελθειν εις την οικιαν του ισχυρου και τα σκευη αυτου σαι αρπασαι εαν μη πρωτον δηση τον ισχυρον και τοτε την οικιαν αυτου διαρπασει [gnt]

Exodus and way outThe GNT word for "spoil" is the ancient Greek word "ἁρπάζω""snatch away, carry off" and may be related to the ancient Greek word "ἅρπη""bird of prey" as a hawk or falcon and which may be related to the PIE (Proto Indo-European) root for "reap", "harvest", "sickle". This word for "snatch" is sometimes translated "rapture" or "ravenous" as in "wolves".
The ancient Greek word "σκευή""vessel" as something that is made but can refer to "people" as in a "chosen vessel".

63. Strongs - watch over

64. Usage - watch over
*G5083 *69 τηρέω (tay-reh'-o) : from teros (a watch; perhaps akin to G2334); to guard (from loss or injury, properly, by keeping the eye upon; and thus differing from G5442, which is properly to prevent escaping; and from G2892, which implies a fortress or full military lines of apparatus), i.e. to note (a prophecy; figuratively, to fulfil a command); by implication, to detain (in custody; figuratively, to maintain); by extension, to withhold (for personal ends; figuratively, to keep unmarried); by extension, to withhold (for personal ends; figuratively, to keep unmarried):--hold fast, keep(- er), (pre-, re-)serve, watch.

65. Strongs - observe

66. Usage - observe
*G5084 *3 τήρησις (tay'-ray-sis) : from G5083; a watching, i.e. (figuratively) observance, or (concretely) a prison:--hold.
Word usage per chapter Words: τηρησει τηρησιν τηρησις

The ancient Greek word "τήρησις""custody, confinement, safeguarding".

67. Watch over
Verse routeRevelation 3:8 I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name. [kjv]
Verse routeοιδα σου τα εργα ιδου δεδωκα ενωπιον σου θυραν ηνεωγμενην ην ουδεις δυναται κλεισαι αυτην οτι μικραν εχεις δυναμιν και ετηρησας μου τον λογον και ουκ ηρενησω το ονομα μου [gnt]

The word used in verses 8 and 10 and translated as "hast kept" is "ετηρησας""watch over, look after, take care of" (aorist active indicative) and appears only in these two verses.

68. Watch over
Revelation 3:8
Strong Used Unique Word Part of speech
Revelation 3:10
Strong Used Unique Word Part of speech
Imagine some pastor, theologian, Greek language expert, etc., making deep theological points about the aorist active indicative of the word translated as "hast kept".

The ancient Greek word "ἑταιρεία""association, company, band". The modern Greek word "εταιρεία" (eh-teh-REE-a) ≈ "association, society, company".

69. Sight for sure ayes
Play on words example: That hot dog looked really good. I wanted one in the worst [wurst] way. I never saw such [sausage] a sight. Note that this joke would not have been complete without a pun [bun].

Note that the English words "see such" do not work well as a play on words while "saw such" work better. To make the play on words, the sentence must be organized so that instead of present tense a past tense is used. Such appears to be the case with play on words in the GNT. Some of those verb tenses may have been chosen, not for deep theological purposes, but to make the play on words work. Thus, the general idea of the words may be more important than trying to get an exact fine-tuned result.

The English word "sausage" comes from the word for "salt".

70. Strongs - friend

71. Usage - friend
*G2083 *3 ἑταίρος (het-ah'-ee-ros) : from etes (a clansman); a comrade:--fellow, friend.
Word usage per chapter Words: εταιρε=3

The ancient Greek word "ἑταιρεία""association, company, band". The modern Greek word "εταιρεία" (eh-teh-REE-a) ≈ "association, society, company".

72. Other different friends
Verse routeMatthew 11:16 But whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like unto children sitting in the markets, and calling unto their fellows, [kjv]
Verse routeτινι δε ομοιωσω την γενεαν ταυτην ομοια εστιν παιδιοις καθημενοις εν ταις αγοραις α προσφωνουντα τοις ετεροις [gnt]

These "children" appear to represent the religious establishment. The word "friends" is used but it appears to be a play on words with the Greek word meaning "other (different)". Following this verse are a series of play on words.
Verse routeActs 2:40 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation. [kjv]

Verse routeMatthew 5:36 Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. [kjv]
Verse route5:37 But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil. [kjv]
Verse route10:30 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. [kjv]

Insight: Jesus is your "head". Believers are the "hairs".

Matthew 5:36: Do not swear by your head as Jesus because you cannot make/judge/separate one believer/person as 'white' or 'black'. (or "narrow gate" or "wide area" or "heaven" or "hell", etc.).

The Greek translated as "white" and "black" mean "distinct" or "indistinct".

Matthew 5:37: But let your rational explanation (to the points provided and implied) be yes, yes no, no. Whatever is more is out of the evil/oppression.

Matthew 10:30: But the very hairs or believers/persons of your head as Jesus are all numbered.

Greek: ο νικων ποιησω αυτον στυλον εν τω ναω του θεου μου και εξω ου μη εξελθη ετι και γραψω επ αυτον το ονομα του θεου μου και το ονομα της πολεως του θεου μου της καινης ιερουσαλημ η καταβαινουσα εκ του ουρανου απο του θεου μου και το ονομα μου το καινον

85. Revelation 3:12

The last Greek word for "new" can be a play on words for "and mind".

86. Diogenes Laertius
In the work of ancient Greek philosopher Diogenes Laertius, Kratos makes a comment. This is a play on the Greek for "new" with "and" and "brain" or "mind". Here are the ancient Greek words.

87. Matthew 9:17 Double meaning
Verse routeMatthew 9:17 Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved. [kjv]
Verse routeουδε βαλλουσιν οινον νεον εις ασκους παλαιους ει δε μηγε ρηγνυνται οι ασκοι και ο οινος εκχειται και οι ασκοι απολλυνται αλλα βαλλουσιν οινον νεον εις ασκους καινους και συντηρουνται [gnt]

As translated: ... but they put new wine into new bottles and both are preserved.
Greek word order: ... but they put wine new into bottles new and both are preserved.
Play on words: ... but they put new wine into bottles and mind and both are preserved.

That is, the new "doctrine" of the "wine" (as in "drink my blood") is put into the containers (body) and the "mind" and, thus, both body and mind are preserved (resurrected). If one puts new "doctrine" of the "wine" into the old containers (body) those containers are not preserved (resurrected)

Paraphrase: Because you have (understood and) observed my reasoning, I will watch over you such that you will not be deceived by the examination while those on the (inhabited) world may be deceived by what they believe is true (but is not) in that (same) examination.
