Matthew 16: Calling a masterful gathering of outgoing church believers
1. Matthew 16:18
KJV: And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
Greek: καγω δε σοι λεγω οτι συ ει πετρος και επι ταυτη τη πετρα οικοδομησω μου την εκκλησιαν και πυλαι αδου ου κατισχυσουσιν αυτης
Latin: et ego dico tibi quia tu es Petrus et super hanc petram aedificabo ecclesiam meam et portae inferi non praevalebunt adversum eam
2. Matthew 16: Calling a masterful gathering of outgoing church believers
Matthew 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. [kjv]
καγω δε σοι λεγω οτι συ ει πετρος και επι ταυτη τη πετρα οικοδομησω μου την εκκλησιαν και πυλαι αδου ου κατισχυσουσιν αυτης [gnt]
Most people agree that the church should represent the
"gathering of believers" that are
"called (out) together". The word
"church" comes from
"Lord" or
"Master".
12:8 For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day. [kjv]
κυριος γαρ εστιν του σαββατου ο υιος του ανθρωπου [gnt]
"ἐκκλησία" ≈ "assembly, called-out, church" as in a "group of believers".
"κύριος" ≈ "lord or master".
Discuss: Is your "
church" a
"gathering of believers" or an entity that wants to be
"Lord" or
"Master" of those in the "
church"?
3. Leviticus 8:3
Leviticus 8:3 And gather thou all the congregation together unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. [kjv]
και πασαν την συναγωγην εκκλησιασον επι την θυραν της σκηνης του μαρτυριου [lxx]
and assemble the whole congregation at the door of the tabernacle of witness. [bs3]
… congregabis … ostium tabernaculi [v]
The Greek word for
"church" was used in the
LXX (Septuagint) for
"assembly" or
"congregation".
A Latin word for door is
"ostium" ≈ "door". The Latin word "
ostarius" for "
doorman" became "
ustaiarius" in common (vulgar) Latin. Then, through the old French "
ussier" we get the Anglo-French "
usser" and then the English word "
usher" , the doorman who "
guards" access to the sheep pen (pews of the sanctuary).
4. Leviticus 8:3
KJV: And gather thou all the congregation together unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.
Hebrew: ואת כל העדה הקהל אל פתח אהל מועד׃
Greek: και πασαν την συναγωγην εκκλησιασον επι την θυραν της σκηνης του μαρτυριου
Brenton: and assemble the whole congregation at the door of the tabernacle of witness.
Latin: et congregabis omnem coetum ad ostium tabernaculi
The English word
"church" has an interesting etymology as it developed from the original Greek.
The "church" can refer to the church building (discussed here).
The "church" can refer to the gathering of believers who meet in that church building (discussed here).
The "church" can refer to the hierarchical structure of the church organization.
The English word
"ecclesiastical" goes back to the
GNT (Greek New Testament) word for "
church" as a "
gathering of believers".
The modern Greek word "εκκλησία" (ehk-klee-SEE-a) ≈ "those called out, church" as in a group of believers.
The Latin word "ecclesiasticus" ≈ "of the church".
The ancient Greek word "ἐκκλησιαστικός" ≈ "of the church".
The ancient Greek word "ἐκκλησία" ≈ "called-out ones" as in a group of believers.
5. Matthew 16:18
After Peter confesses (states) that Jesus is the "
Christ", Jesus uses a double meaning.
… ecclesiam … portae inferi … praevalebunt … [v]

17. Usage - lord

18. Emphasis
There is a difference in emphasis of the two words.
Ecclesiastical (in the original sense) has to be with the believer or "called-out ones".
Church (in the original sense) has to do with the Lord or Master.
In some cases, the church through the ages has set itself up as the "
Lord" on "
Master" (or go-between) in contrast to the church being a gathering of "
called-out ones" or believers.
This elevation in meaning as one of status has happened with many words.
One example is that of a "
saint".
19. Wholesome and healthy sanctified saints
The original word for
"saint" meant someone who was
"holy". The Catholic church elevated "
saint" to "
Saint".
Matthew 27:52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, [kjv]
και τα μνημεια ανεωχθησαν και πολλα σωματα των κεκοιμημενων αγιων ηγερθησαν [gnt]
… sanctorum … [v]
… weihaize … [got]
… Heiligen… [lu]
The English word
"holy" came from "
wholesome" as "
healthy" since one should be physically healthy or whole and spiritually healthy or holy.
Song: Good King Wenceslas - Saint Stephen's Day
March 17: Saint Patrick's Day
20. Sinners and saints
It has happened that a family named Sinner and another family named Saint lived on the same street next to each other. Thus, one street had both Sinners and Saints.
Pastors will sometimes use an "
equivocation" to blur the distinction between "
saint" as "
holy believer" and "
Saint" as someone canonized by, say, the Catholic Church.
21. The lord bred to loaf
Matthew 6:11 Give us this day our daily bread. [kjv]
τον αρτον ημων τον επιουσιον δος ημιν σημερον [gnt]
panem … [v]
… pan … [es]
From the Old English, the word "
Lord" comes from the "
loaf protector" as in "
one who guards the loaves" from "hlaf" (bread) and "
weard" (keeper or warder or guardian).
The word "
Lady" comes from the "
loaf kneader".
The Latin word
"panis" ≈ "bread" and is the source of the name of "
Panera Bread", literally "
Bread Bread".
22. Matthew 6:11 Panera Bread
Matthew 6:11 Give us this day our daily bread. [kjv]
τον αρτον ημων τον επιουσιον δος ημιν σημερον [gnt]
panem … [v]
… pan … [es]
The Latin word
"pane" ≈ "bread" and is the source of the name of
"Panera Bread", literally
"Bread Bread". The Spanish word
"pan" ≈ "bread, loaf".
The English word
"lord" is from "
loaf guarder" or "
loaf ward" (try letting the "
f" disappear) where
"loaf" was the word for
"bread", like Latin "
f" to Spanish "
h".
Have you ever been to Punera Bread?
Bread puns happen when you yeast expect it. I tell puns because it is the way I was bread.

30. Matthew 6:30 Oven
Matthew 6:30 Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? [kjv]
ει δε τον χορτον του αγρου σημερον οντα και αυριον εις κλιβανον βαλλομενον ο θεος ουτως αμφιεννυσιν ου πολλω μαλλον υμας ολιγοπιστοι [gnt]
… clibanum … [v]
Some have connected the word for "
loaf" to the Greek word for oven.
31. Matthew 6:30
KJV: Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?
Greek: ει δε τον χορτον του αγρου σημερον οντα και αυριον εις κλιβανον βαλλομενον ο θεος ουτως αμφιεννυσιν ου πολλω μαλλον υμας ολιγοπιστοι
Latin: si autem faenum agri quod hodie est et cras in clibanum mittitur Deus sic vestit quanto magis vos minimae fidei
32. Matthew 27:66 Custodians
Matthew 27:66 So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch. [kjv]
οι δε πορευθεντες ησφαλισαντο τον ταφον σφραγισαντες τον λιθον μετα της κουστωδιας [gnt]
… lapidem … custodibus [v]
… stann … wearden. [wes]
… камень … кустодиею. [ocs]
The "
watch" in Greek is «
κουστωδίας» which was a word borrowed from Latin "
custodibus" and from which we get the word "
custodian".
After the resurrection, some of the custodians went to tell the chief priests what had happened.
The Old English word
"wearden" ≈ "watch, guard" and is the second part of the English word
"lord" as, originally, "
load guarder" or "
bread guarder".
33. Matthew 27:66
KJV: So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch.
Greek: οι δε πορευθεντες ησφαλισαντο τον ταφον σφραγισαντες τον λιθον μετα της κουστωδιας
Latin: illi autem abeuntes munierunt sepulchrum signantes lapidem cum custodibus
Wessex: Soðlice hyo ferdon. & ymb-tremedon þa byrigenne. & inseggledon þanne stann mid þam wearden.
Slavonic: Они же шедше утвердиша гроб, знаменавше камень с кустодиею.
34. Verses
Let us look at some verses that provide background on the above differences.
35. George Whitfield and Celtic Kirk
George Whitfield (or Whitefield) (1714-1770) was an English itinerant preacher and evangelist and one of the founders of Methodism along with the Wesley brothers, John Wesley and Charles Wesley.
George Whitefield started an orphanage, the Bethesda Academy, in Savannah, GA, which exists to this day.
Bethesda means "
House of Mercy" in Hebrew.
Whitefield wanted the orphanage to be a place of strong Calvinist influence with a wholesome atmosphere and strong discipline. Boys were taught trades so that they could earn a living as adults. (Wikipedia)
The Whitefield Chapel is still on the grounds of Bethesda Academy in Savannah, GA.
36. Whitefield Chapel
The Whitefield Chapel is still on the grounds of Bethesda Academy in Savannah, GA.
I attended a small Presbyterian churchs' services there in the 2003-2004 school year. That small church was called
Kirk O' the Isles (Presbyterian Church PCA), where "
Kirk" is the Celtic name for "
church".
37. The Kirk Presbyterian
This little church started on Whitfield Island, but later moved nearby to the mainland and changed its name to "
The Kirk Presbyterian". The web site is
https://www.kirkpca.org/ (as of 2021-08-12)
38. Savannah
The Whitfield square in Savannah is named in honor of George Whitfield.
39. Benjamin Franklin: Word of mouth
Benjamin
Franklin had a printing shop in Philadelphia, PA. A statue of Franklin at his printing press is in Philadelphia and a similar one at the Masonic Homes Masonic Lodge in Elizabethtown, PA.
Benjamin
Franklin heard George
Whitefield preach at a revival meeting in Philadelphia, PA. Franklin did not believe Whitefield could preach in open air and be heard by tens of thousands of listeners.
While
Whitefield preached, he paced towards his shop until he could barely hear what he was saying distinctly, about 500 feet. He then estimated that a crowd of 30,000 could hear him preach in open air (at 2 square feet per person). The actual number would be about 29,000 square yards, ignoring other acoustic factors.
40. Matthew 25:38 Taking someone into a synagogue
Matthew 25:38 When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? [kjv]
ποτε δε σε ειδαμεν ξενον και συνηγαγομεν η γυμνον και περιεβαλομεν [gnt]
… hospitem … colleximus … [v]
The parable of the
sheep and
goats uses the words
"stranger" and
"took thee in".
"ξένος" ≈ "foreign, strange, usual".
"συναγωγή" ≈ "gathering" and is the source of the English word "synagogue".
Paraphrase:
When did you see me an outside stranger and took the lead in inviting me into your assembly or gathering as a guest?
A modern version of this is taking an active role in
"inviting someone to church". The follow-up might be to make help them get "
clothed" in "
righteousness".
41. Gathering together a synagogue
Today, one thinks of a "
synagogue" as a place where Jewish worship takes place. The word "
synagogue" is a
Greek word made of up two parts.
The prefix "syn" meaning together as in "symphony" (sounding together).
The root "ago" meaning leading or bringing, reduplicated as is not uncommon.
The meaning, both in the
LXX and
GNT (and today) is that of people being led to come or be brought together.
Matthew 25:38 When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? [kjv]
ποτε δε σε ειδαμεν ξενον και συνηγαγομεν η γυμνον και περιεβαλομεν [gnt]
… hospitem … colleximus … [v]
… herborles… herboreden … [wy]
… herbourlesse … lodged … [ty]
… Gast … beherberget… [lu]
The parable of the sheep and goats uses the words "
stranger" and "
took thee in". What does it mean to "
take someone in"? One way to put the above together might be as follows.
When did you see me an outside stranger and took the lead in inviting me into your assembly or gathering as a guest?
A modern version of this is taking an active role in "
inviting someone to church". The follow-up might be to make help them get "
clothed" in "
righteousness".
42. Matthew 25:38
KJV: When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee?
Greek: ποτε δε σε ειδομεν ειδαμεν ξενον και συνηγαγομεν η γυμνον και περιεβαλομεν
Latin: quando autem te vidimus hospitem et colleximus te aut nudum et cooperuimus
Wessex: hwanne ge-seage we þt þu cume waere. & we þe in-laðedon. oððe nacod & we þe scriddan
Wycliffe: and whanne sayn we thee herborles, and we herboreden thee; or nakid, and we hiliden thee?
Tyndale: when sawe we ye herbourlesse and lodged the? or naked and clothed the?
Gothic: hvanuh than thuk sehvum gast jah galathodedum? aiththau naqadana jah wasidedum?
Luther: Wann haben wir dich einen Gast gesehen und beherberget, oder nackend und haben dich bekleidet?

44. Exodus 4:29 Gathering together
Exodus 4:29 And Moses and Aaron went and gathered together all the elders of the children of Israel: [kjv]
… ואהרן … [he]
επορευθη δε μωυσης και ααρων και συνηγαγον την γερουσιαν των υιων ισραηλ [lxx]
… congregaverunt … [v]
The Latin word
"congrego" ≈ "herd into a flock" and is the source of the English word
"congregation" as adopted by Tyndale about 1520 as a way to translate the modern Greek word
"εκκλησία" (ehk-klee-SEE-a) ≈ "those called out, church" as a word for the "
church".
.
45. Exodus 4:29
KJV: And Moses and Aaron went and gathered together all the elders of the children of Israel:
Hebrew: וילך משה ואהרן ויאספו את כל זקני בני ישראל׃
Greek: επορευθη δε μωυσης και ααρων και συνηγαγον την γερουσιαν των υιων ισραηλ
Latin: veneruntque simul et congregaverunt cunctos seniores filiorum Israhel
Wycliffe: And thei camen togidere, and gaderiden alle the eldere men of the sones of Israel.
Luther: Und sie gingen hin und versammelten alle Ältesten von den Kindern Israel.
Spanish: Y fueron Moisés y Aarón, y reunieron todos los ancianos de los hijos de Israel:
46. Matthew 6: The missing part worked out for the birds
Matthew 6:26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? [kjv]
εμβλεψατε εις τα πετεινα του ουρανου οτι ου σπειρουσιν ουδε θεριζουσιν ουδε συναγουσιν εις αποθηκας και ο πατηρ υμων ο ουρανιος τρεφει αυτα ουχ υμεις μαλλον διαφερετε αυτων [gnt]
Jesus mentions
birds four times in Matthew. According to Jesus:
The birds do not sow.
The birds do not reap.
The birds do not gather into barns.
Who are the birds? What do they do? Might the code word meaning Jesus provides elsewhere be applicable to the generic "
birds" or "
fowls" of the "
air" or "
heaven" (same words in Greek) and provide a alternative meaning to the literal sense of the verse?
47. Matthew 6:26
KJV: Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?
Greek: εμβλεψατε εις τα πετεινα του ουρανου οτι ου σπειρουσιν ουδε θεριζουσιν ουδε συναγουσιν εις αποθηκας και ο πατηρ υμων ο ουρανιος τρεφει αυτα ουχ υμεις μαλλον διαφερετε αυτων
Latin: respicite volatilia caeli quoniam non serunt neque metunt neque congregant in horrea et Pater vester caelestis pascit illa nonne vos magis pluris estis illis
48. Persecution
49. Matthew 10:17
KJV: But beware of men: for they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues;
Greek: προσεχετε δε απο των ανθρωπων παραδωσουσιν γαρ υμας εις συνεδρια και εν ταις συναγωγαις αυτων μαστιγωσουσιν υμας
Latin: cavete autem ab hominibus tradent enim vos in conciliis et in synagogis suis flagellabunt vos
50. Matthew 22:10 Wedding guests
Matthew 22:10 So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good: and the wedding was furnished with guests. [kjv]
και εξελθοντες οι δουλοι εκεινοι εις τας οδους συνηγαγον παντας ους ευρον πονηρους τε και αγαθους και επλησθη ο νυμφων ανακειμενων [gnt]
… congregaverunt … [v]
A place where the word for
"synagogue" as
"gathered together" is used in the
GNT is in the parable of the wedding guests.
51. Matthew 22:10
KJV: So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good: and the wedding was furnished with guests.
Greek: και εξελθοντες οι δουλοι εκεινοι εις τας οδους συνηγαγον παντας οσους ους ευρον πονηρους τε και αγαθους και επλησθη ο γαμος νυμφων ανακειμενων
Latin: et egressi servi eius in vias congregaverunt omnes quos invenerunt malos et bonos et impletae sunt nuptiae discumbentium
Wessex: Ða eoden þa þeowes ut on þa wegas & ge-gaderedon ealle þa þe hyo ge-metton gode & yfele. Ða waeron þa gyfton-hus. mid sittenden mannen ge-felledde.
Tyndale: The seruauntes wet out into the hiewayes and gaddered to gedder as many as they coulde fynde both good and bad and ye weddinge was furnysshed with gestes.
52. John 6:13 Gathering to feed
John 6:13 Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten. [kjv]
συνηγαγον ουν και εγεμισαν δωδεκα κοφινους κλασματων εκ των πεντε αρτων των κριθινων α επερισσευσαν τοις βεβρωκοσιν [gnt]
collegerunt … [v]
In the feeding of the multitude in John, the leftovers were
"gathered".
Might this gathering of the fragments have any significance to the parable of the sheep and goats?
53. John 6:13
KJV: Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten.
Greek: συνηγαγον ουν και εγεμισαν δωδεκα κοφινους κλασματων εκ των πεντε αρτων των κριθινων α επερισσευσεν επερισσευσαν τοις βεβρωκοσιν
Latin: collegerunt ergo et impleverunt duodecim cofinos fragmentorum ex quinque panibus hordiaciis quae superfuerunt his qui manducaverunt
