Most people agree that the church should represent the "gathering of believers" that are "called (out) together". The word "church" comes from "Lord" or "Master".

The Greek word for "church" was used in the LXX (Septuagint) for "assembly" or "congregation".

A Latin word for door is "ostium""door". The Latin word "ostarius" for "doorman" became "ustaiarius" in common (vulgar) Latin. Then, through the old French "ussier" we get the Anglo-French "usser" and then the English word "usher" , the doorman who "guards" access to the sheep pen (pews of the sanctuary).

18. Emphasis
There is a difference in emphasis of the two words. In some cases, the church through the ages has set itself up as the "Lord" on "Master" (or go-between) in contrast to the church being a gathering of "called-out ones" or believers. This elevation in meaning as one of status has happened with many words.

One example is that of a "saint".

It has happened that a family named Sinner and another family named Saint lived on the same street next to each other. Thus, one street had both Sinners and Saints.

Pastors will sometimes use an "equivocation" to blur the distinction between "saint" as "holy believer" and "Saint" as someone canonized by, say, the Catholic Church.

After the resurrection, some of the custodians went to tell the chief priests what had happened.

George Whitfield (or Whitefield) (1714-1770) was an English itinerant preacher and evangelist and one of the founders of Methodism along with the Wesley brothers, John Wesley and Charles Wesley.
George Whitefield started an orphanage, the Bethesda Academy, in Savannah, GA, which exists to this day. Bethesda means "House of Mercy" in Hebrew. The Whitefield Chapel is still on the grounds of Bethesda Academy in Savannah, GA.

Benjamin Franklin heard George Whitefield preach at a revival meeting in Philadelphia, PA. Franklin did not believe Whitefield could preach in open air and be heard by tens of thousands of listeners.

While Whitefield preached, he paced towards his shop until he could barely hear what he was saying distinctly, about 500 feet. He then estimated that a crowd of 30,000 could hear him preach in open air (at 2 square feet per person). The actual number would be about 29,000 square yards, ignoring other acoustic factors.

Today, one thinks of a "synagogue" as a place where Jewish worship takes place. The word "synagogue" is a Greek word made of up two parts. The meaning, both in the LXX and GNT (and today) is that of people being led to come or be brought together.

The modern Greek word "συνηγαγόμεν" (see-nee-ga-GO-mehn) ≈ "take in" and is made of two main parts. So the Greek word has the idea of taking a lead in bringing together whoever it is that is mentioned.

In this case, the idea is that one might take the lead in bringing a "stranger" together as a "guest" in a group, dwelling, etc.

The present tense Greek word "συνάγω" (see-NA-go) ≈ "I gather together".

The modern Greek word "συναγωγή" (see-na-go-GEE) ≈ "assembly, gathering" and is the source of the English word "synagogue".
