1. Matthew 16:16-17 Setup
Verse routeMatthew 16:16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. [kjv]
Verse routeαποκριθεις δε σιμων πετρος ειπεν συ ει ο χριστος ο υιος του θεου του ζωντος [gnt]
Verse route16:17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar–jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. [kjv]
Verse route αποκριθεις δε ο ιησους ειπεν αυτω μακαριος ει σιμων βαριωνα οτι σαρξ και αιμα ουκ απεκαλυψεν σοι αλλ ο πατηρ μου ο εν τοις ουρανοις [gnt]

Note that Jesus does not use the name "Peter". Is it important?

2. Matthew 16:18 Setup
Verse routeMatthew 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. [kjv]
Verse routeκαγω δε σοι λεγω οτι συ ει πετρος και επι ταυτη τη πετρα οικοδομησω μου την εκκλησιαν και πυλαι αδου ου κατισχυσουσιν αυτης [gnt]

The use of the word "rock" is ambiguous. To what does "this" refer? These verses setup the following verse.

Is a definite article needed before "Peter"? The name "Peter" appears 16 times in Matthew in the GNT (Greek New Testament). Jesus is speaking. That may be important.

4. Matthew 16:16
 All
KJV: And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.

7. Matthew Binding and loosing on earth and in heaven
Verse routeMatthew 16:19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. [kjv]
Verse route δωσω σοι τας κλειδας της βασιλειας των ουρανων και ο εαν δησης επι της γης εσται δεδεμενον εν τοις ουρανοις και ο εαν λυσης επι της γης εσται λελυμενον εν τοις ουρανοις [gnt]

Horizontal keyThe last part is repeated in Matthew 18 without the "keys" and appears to connect these discourses.

Verse route18:18 Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. [kjv]
Verse routeαμην λεγω υμιν οσα εαν δησητε επι της γης εσται δεδεμενα εν ουρανω και οσα εαν λυσητε επι της γης εσται λελυμενα εν ουρανω [gnt]

The topic here is the "binding" and "loosing" on earth and in heaven. Another page addresses the "keys".

18. Elizabeth Fulhame: forgotten chemist
The idea of a "catalyst", from the meaning of the Greek word, is that a "catalyst" unbinds or loosens the chemical bonds that would otherwise inhibit the reaction from taking place.

The idea of catalysis was discovered and named by the British chemist Elizabeth Fulhame in her 1794 book An Essay On Combustion with a View to a New Art of Dying and Painting. Some of her work is considered the foundation of (chemical-based) photography.

She stated that she did not think her work would be taken seriously due to her being a woman.

20. Catalyst as a noun

21. Jesus and the law and Zaccheaus
Jesus and Zaccheaus: (verb). A few verses later is the Palm Sunday entrance of Jesus.
Verse routeLuke 19:5 And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for to day I must abide at thy house. [kjv]
Verse routeκαι ως ηλθεν επι τον τοπον αναβλεψας ο ιησους ειπεν προς αυτον ζακχαιε σπευσας καταβηθι σημερον γαρ εν τω οικω σου δει με μειναι [gnt]
Verse route19:7 And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, That he was gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner. [kjv]
Verse routeκαι ιδοντες παντες διεγογγυζον λεγοντες οτι παρα αμαρτωλω ανδρι εισηλθεν καταλυσαι [gnt]

Jesus and the law and the prophets: (verb). This is near the beginning of the Sermon on the Mount.
Verse routeMatthew 5:17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. [kjv]
Verse routeμη νομισητε οτι ηλθον καταλυσαι τον νομον η τους προφητας ουκ ηλθον καταλυσαι αλλα πληρωσαι [gnt]

The English is "fulfill" or "fill full". The Greek for "complete" can involve adding or taking away - as in a sculpture where parts of the material are chipped away.

Information sign More: Matthew 5: 17 Leave the light on but do not use the law as a residence inn

22. Strongs - bind

23. Usage - bind
*G1210 *43 δέω (deh'-o) : a primary verb; to bind (in various applications, literally or figuratively):--bind, be in bonds, knit, tie, wind.
The ancient Greek word "δέω""bind, tie, fasten, hinder".

The ancient Greek word "δύσις""setting of sun, west" and could be a play on words in certain contexts.

24. Reasoning: step 1
Bind and loose 1 Here is a diagram that attempts to show exactly what Jesus says.
Verse routeMatthew 18:18 Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. [kjv]

If what is "bound" remains unchanged and what is "loosed" is unchanged, one might reason that everything "else" might be unchanged.

Can one really have this control over what happens in the "Kingdom of God"? Is not God in charge?

25. Reasoning: step 2
Bind and loose 2The word "else" is used here for anything that is not a "bind" and not a "loose".

There are a lot of things that can be "bound", "loosed", and everything "else". And this applies to many in the "church".
For many reasons, what Jesus says appears to indicate that the Kingdom of Heaven, or kingdom of the air, coexists with the kingdom of the earth and "suffers violence" or "compulsion" by the "oppressive" and "evil" powers of the earth.

26. Matthew 11: Exploring the Kingdom of Heaven
Jesus speaks of John the Baptist who appears to represent Elijah.
Verse routeMatthew 11:10 For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. [kjv]
Verse routeουτος εστιν περι ου γεγραπται ιδου εγω αποστελλω τον αγγελον μου προ προσωπου σου ος κατασκευασει την οδον σου εμπροσθεν σου [gnt]

Verse route11:12 And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force. [kjv]
Verse routeαπο δε των ημερων ιωαννου του βαπτιστου εως αρτι η βασιλεια των ουρανων βιαζεται και βιασται αρπαζουσιν αυτην [gnt]

The word for "prepare", not the same as in Malachi, has in it the Greek word used for "goods" or "vessels" or "people" to be "raptured" in the parable of the strong man. The word for "take" is the Greek word for "plunder" or "snatch" or "extort" or "rapture" while the word for "force" is that of "compulsion". In context, these verses provide a possible meaning of "kingdom of heaven".

27. Model of the kingdoms and births
Verse routeJohn 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he can not see the kingdom of God. [kjv]
Verse routeαπεκριθη ιησους και ειπεν αυτω αμην αμην λεγω σοι εαν μη τις γεννηθη ανωθεν ου δυναται ιδειν την βασιλειαν του θεου [gnt]

28. Details

29. Reasoning: step 3
Bind and loose 3Believers are to be "in the world" and not "of the world".

This diagram attempts to depict this.

Paraphrase: Everything done in the "kingdom of earth" is done in the "kingdom of heaven" since the "kingdom of heaven" is an important subset of the "kingdom of earth".
Verse routeJohn 17:16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. [kjv]
Verse routeεκ του κοσμου ουκ εισιν καθως εγω ουκ ειμι εκ του κοσμου [gnt]

The "kingdom of heaven" appears to be within the "kingdom of the earth" both of which are inside space and time.

The "Kingdom of God" appears to be outside of space and time.

30. John 17:16
   John 17:16
 All
KJV: They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
Greek: εκ του κοσμου ουκ εισιν καθως εγω ουκ ειμι εκ του κοσμουουκ ειμι

31. Reasoning: step 4
Bind and loose 4Good teachers use "distractor" answers to questions and comments to see if students really understand what they have been taught.

Is Jesus a "good teacher"? Does Jesus use "distractor" sayings to see if we really understand what he is saying.

Discuss: How could someone, or the church, misinterpret what Jesus is saying to assume that they have power to do anything they want on earth?
Verse routeMatthew 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. [kjv]
Verse routeκαγω δε σοι λεγω οτι συ ει πετρος και επι ταυτη τη πετρα οικοδομησω μου την εκκλησιαν και πυλαι αδου ου κατισχυσουσιν αυτης [gnt]
Verse route16:19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. [kjv]
Verse route δωσω σοι τας κλειδας της βασιλειας των ουρανων και ο εαν δησης επι της γης εσται δεδεμενον εν τοις ουρανοις και ο εαν λυσης επι της γης εσται λελυμενον εν τοις ουρανοις [gnt]

32. Matthew 11:5: Trapped by an offensive misinterpretation of Jesus
Verse routeMatthew 11:6 And blessed is he, who soever shall not be offended in me. [kjv]
Verse routeκαι μακαριος εστιν ος αν μη σκανδαλισθη εν εμοι [gnt]
Verse routeblessidsclaundrid … [wy]
Verse routehappyoffended … [ty]

Jesus is speaking. The Greek for "blessed" here means "happy" or "content". The Greek for "offended" means "entrapped" or "ensnared" but, as an idiom, means "ensnare yourself" or "deceive yourself" or "are deceived by others" or "misinterpret".

The Greek word translated as "temptation" (related to the Greek for "pirate") means to be "examined" to see if you can be "deceived" by what you believe is true.

Have you ever "misinterpreted" what Jesus said? How do you know? What might have motivated this statement by Jesus? Let us investigate.

Information sign More: Do not mention temptations nor attempt to be a pirate
Information sign More: Matthew 11:5: Trapped by an offensive misinterpretation of Jesus

33. Reasoning: step 5
Bind and loose 5To get a better idea, the "bind", "else" and "loose" might be changed to "red", "green" and "blue".

That is, there is no effective change in anything.

One should do what one is supposed to do. One does not have a "blank check" to do anything one wants.
Verse routeMatthew 16:19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. [kjv]
Verse route δωσω σοι τας κλειδας της βασιλειας των ουρανων και ο εαν δησης επι της γης εσται δεδεμενον εν τοις ουρανοις και ο εαν λυσης επι της γης εσται λελυμενον εν τοις ουρανοις [gnt]
