The shock and awe deception
by RS  admin@creationpie.com : 1024 x 640

1. The shock and awe deception
Shock
A military saying during the (first) Gulf War was that of "shock and awe". That is, overwhelm your opponent with vastly superior force. However, throughout military history, it is far easier to trick or deceive your opponent than to use overwhelming force.

In debates or sermons this technique, sometimes called the "Gish Gallop", is used to overwhelm others with details or verses, out of context, to confuse and/or deceive their audience.
Some pastors will do this. They will bombard their congregation with verse after verse, without context, rattling off references, to make their congregation think they actually know what they are talking about, to deceive or mislead their congregation, etc.

2. Chargers
The NFL (National Football League) Chargers, sometimes called the "Bolts", have a lightning bolt as part of their logo.

Original owner/manager Frank Leahy: "I liked it because they were yelling 'charge' and sounding the bugle at Dodger Stadium and at USC games.".

One Super Bowl: 1995 (1994 season) , 49ers 49, Chargers 26 (lost)

The Chargers played in the AFL (American Football League) Championship game 5 times before the first Super Bowl, winning 1 of those 5.

Originally the Los Angeles Chargers, they have since returned to Los Angeles.

3. Lightning
The NHL (National Hockey League) Tampa Bay Lightning, known as the "Bolts", have the lightning bolt as part of their logo. Tampa, FL, is known as the "Lightning capital of North America".

Stanley Cup championships: 2004, 2020, 2021. Finals in 2015 and 2022.

4. Shock and awe
Here we look at the "shock and awe" as used to deceive as part of that barrage of sometimes incomprehensible details.

In doing so with a specific example, several verses are connected that do not immediately appear to be connected.

5. Gish Gallop
A style of debate like "shock and awe" is sometimes called the "Gish Gallop".

Note that both Gish and Scott are very biased so one needs to look at the claims of both very closely to determine truth from non-truth.
The name was coined in 1994 by anthropologist Eugenie Scott (who opposes creation science) after creation scientist Duane Gish (1921-2013) of ICR (Institute for Creation Research) who used the method to challenge the "scientific fact of evolution". Wikipedia. (as of 2023-05-24). Gish would fire off claim after claim, some true and some not, to overwhelm the debate opponent.

6. Technical note
DNA bases Two chains DNA code
Technical note: A lot of scientific hand-waving goes on in the evolution debate on both sides. Evolution is not a proven fact since one cannot "prove" science. One can only demonstrate ideas, that reality fits certain models, etc. What do we know as facts and proof? This is from the field of information and computation and logic and not science and models and ideas. The obvious conclusion is that the coded information in life could not arise by chance is 6,000 years, in 15 billion years, 15 trillion years, 15 billion trillion years, etc. The only alternative appears to be that there is a creator outside of time and space.

Discuss: Why is this simple proof not covered in school?

7. Shock deception 1
Shock deception 1The first step in a simple "shock and awe" deception is to pick a Bible verse out of context that will support the ultimate goal of the deception. The base idea is that "Jesus was shocking in his day". Neither the context nor other verses in other Gospels which might explain this verse are provided.

Jesus was SHOCKING in His day
Verse routeLuke 14:26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. [kjv]

The context is not explained. Just the effect of the English words. The goal is to make people think that Jesus said "shocking" things in his day.

8. Text without context
Context"A text without a context is a pretext for a proof text". Dr. Carson who attributes it to his father, a Canadian minister.

The "proof text" refers to some text used to "prove" some (personal) claim or belief.

Cherry pick 2This is often done by "cherry picking" verses that support one's personal view which is a form of "confirmation bias". Another name for this deception is that of "selective evidence".

9. Shock deception 2
Shock deception 2The context is not explained. Just the effect of the English words. The goal is to make people think that Jesus said "shocking" things in his day.

This is a "selective evidence" deception. Most people will not know the context or what is said elsewhere in the Bible about the verse.

Jesus was SHOCKING in His day
Verse routeLuke 14:26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. [kjv]

10. Shock deception 3
Shock deception 3The next step is to move to today's culture using the idea of "Jesus is shocking today". This "culture shock" may be against God or not against God. This is not elaborated.
Jesus was SHOCKING in His day Jesus is SHOCKING today

Verse routeLuke 14:26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. [kjv]

11. Shock deception 4
Shock deception 4The implied deception is that Jesus would approve of those "shocking" things in today's culture.

If someone with actual knowledge of the deception ask questions, the deceiver can claim "plausible deniability" in that they meant something else than what the implied or let people think.
Verse routeLuke 14:26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. [kjv]

The better "deceiver" refines the "sales pitch" to maintain "plausible deniability".

12. Context
Verse routeLuke 14:26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. [kjv]

The Greek word used here for "hate" does mean "hate". Over the years, as elsewhere in the Bible, some have "grasped at straws" to find some explanation of the verse other than what the verse appears to say. One "quibble" in this case is to say that, in that culture, "hate" meant "less love". This ignores all the other places where the same word "hate" appears and those verses would not make sense with this revised definition.

There are two contexts that are important here.

13. Hate
Verse routeProverbs 8:13 The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate. [kjv]

Verse routeHebrews 1:9 Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. [kjv]

We are to "hate sin" but not "hate the sinner". The Greek for "evil" is that of "oppression". The Greek for "iniquity" is that of anything that goes "against the law" of man. In Biblical terms, it is anything that goes a "against the Law" of God.

16. Context in Luke
Verse routeLuke 14:25 And there went great multitudes with him: and he turned, and said unto them, [kjv]
Verse route14:26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. [kjv]
Verse route14:27 And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple. [kjv]

The verses after these talk about counting the cost before starting a building project. Some theologians, commentators, pastors, etc., try to use that context to explain the "hate" in Luke 14:26.

To understand Luke, let us first look at Matthew.

20. Matthew 12:47-50
Verse routeMatthew 12:47 Then one said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to speak with thee. [kjv]
Verse route12:48 But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren? [kjv]
Verse route12:49 And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren ! [kjv]
Verse route12:50 For who soever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother. [kjv]

These verses can be added for the effect of minimizing the family in the culture of today and emphasizing the community or organization. These ideas are the foundational part of Karl Marx, and humanistic (against God) movements such as Communism, socialism, etc.

Note that these verses as spoken by Jesus will be used to tie together two verses that do not, without study, appear to be directly related.

21. Karl Marx
The anti-religion, anti-Bible and anti-God writings of Karl Marx (1818-1883), the foundation of humanism, socialism and communism, emphasize the "community" or "society" over the "individual".

Pastors sometimes put these ideas into the church by carefully blurring the distinction between freedom in Christ and political and social freedom. Churches that promote socialism or humanism in this way tend to avoid certain parts of the Bible.
Only in community with others has each individual the means of cultivating his gifts in all directions; only in the community, therefore, is personal freedom possible. Karl Marx.

Society does not consist of individuals, but expresses the sum of interrelations, the relations within which these individuals stand. Karl Marx.

27. Sword of truth
Verse routeMatthew 10:34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. [kjv]
Verse route10:35 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. [kjv]
Verse route10:36 And a man's foes shall be they of his own household. [kjv]

Divide into two parts
One immediate view of these verses is that the "sword" represents "truth" of "reality" and that whenever the "reality truth" of Jesus is introduced to a group, family, etc., there will be division.

Matthew was an eye witness, a tax collector who took notes/shorthand and had to remember details. Most people in the area grew up speaking both Aramaic and Greek. Only the religious elite studied to read Hebrew. Hebrew was no longer spoken. Matthew preserves many of the subtle double meanings and play on words spoken by Jesus.

28. Matthew and Luke
Verse routeMatthew 10:34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. [kjv]

Luke changes the words "send" or "throw" to "give" and "sword" to "division". Perhaps that is what people remembered some twenty years later when interviewed by Paul's helper, the Greek doctor Luke. It appears that Luke did not have access to the Matthew texts and used more generic words that preserved part of the meaning spoken by Jesus and written in Matthew. Both "throw" and "sword" have special double meanings in terms of the Last Supper (and other places).

Verse routeLuke 12:51 Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division: [kjv]

Matthew uses precise words that relate with secondary meanings to other parts of what Jesus said. Luke uses generic replacement words that, while saying about the same thing, lack tho additional meaning connections.

37. Bearing a cross
Verse routeMatthew 10:38 And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me. [kjv]

CrossThe words "taketh" and "followeth after" are important in Matthew. Luke changes them. Human organizations (built of sand) want you to be a "leader" (in their system) and "influence" or "manipulate" others. Jesus (as the rock) wants you to "understand", "follow behind" him, and "teach" and "make disciples" of others.

The Greek word for "worthy" is the word from which we get the English word "axiom". Luke changes this to "disciple".

To "bear the cross" of Jesus brings to mind the song "Keep thou my way" by Fanny Crosby and the cross-eyed bear called "Gladly" (verse 3).

O let Thy sacred light O'er my pathway shine;
Kept by Thy tender care, Gladly the cross I'll bear

Now we have a context for the verse in Luke about "hate" and the verse in Matthew about "love". What do each of these verses mean and how do they relate?

The key to the connection is to understand the logical meaning "more than" in Matthew 10:37. The Greek word is that of "over" which has the same logical meaning as "more than".

Love your neighbor as yourself

The "as yourself" provides what engineers call a "negative feedback loop". One is not to do for their neighbor what violates God's laws.

Verse routeLuke 10:27 And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself. [kjv]

    61. Love your family as yourself
    Love your family as yourself
    Love your neighbor as yourself
The "more than" means that one should love "family" (everyone) "less than or equal to" Jesus. That is, one should not love the world more than Jesus or family. This is another may to state the "love your neighbor as yourself".
Verse routeMatthew 10:37 He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. [kjv]

    62. Love your family

Verse routeLuke 14:26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. [kjv]

How does Luke get "hate"? Luke is writing what people remember. People make mistakes, especially logical mistakes.

    64. Luke 1:1-3
Verse routeLuke 1:1 Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us, [kjv]

Luke is correctly recording what people remember. The Bible is correct in that the people remembered and believed what they were saying. It appears they were making a simple logical mistake that many people make, even those students learning to program computers.

    71. Verse 1
You will notice we say "brother and sister" 'round here,
    It's because we're a family and these are so near;
When one has a heartache, we all share the tears,
And rejoice in each victory in this family so dear.

    73. Fault-tolerant computing concepts
Fault tolerance is important in distributed systems and in organizations.

Redundancy can be used to detect and correct errors (discrepancies).
An understanding of FTC (Fault Tolerant Computing) techniques is important in understanding the differences in various Bible texts.

The key to fault tolerance is redundancy. The simplest model is to use redundancy and take a majority vote of the various ways. There are many more advanced methods not discussed here.
