Many English words, some used in the KJV (King James Version), had a more generic meaning at one time. Each of these words narrowed in meaning over the years.

8. Romans 11:9
Verse routeRomans 11:9 And David saith, Let their table be made a snare, and a trap, and a stumblingblock, and a recompence unto them: [kjv]
Verse routeκαι δαυιδ λεγει γενηθητω η τραπεζα αυτων εις παγιδα και εις θηραν και εις σκανδαλον και εις ανταποδομα αυτοις [gnt]

A word sometimes translated as "trap" is the ancient Greek word "θήρα""hunting" or can be the result of a hunting trip.

The Greek uses essentially three words that mean "trap" or "snare". Many using English do not like to repeat the same word and need to then make up different words. The word often translated as "stumbling block" is that of a "entrapment" or "snare".

One trick in a hunt is to use a split group of hunters where one group attempts to herd or move the prey into a target area while the other group waits for them to move into the "trap". The same idea is present in deceptions that cause misinterpretations.

Wycliffe: And Dauith seith, Be the boord of hem maad in to a gryn bifor hem, and in to catchyng, and in to sclaundre, and in to yeldyng to hem.
Tyndale: And David sayth: Let their table be made a snare to take them with all and an occasion to faule and a rewarde vnto them.
Luther: Und David spricht: Laß ihren Tisch zu einem Strick werden und zu einer Berückung und zum Ärgernis und ihnen zur Vergeltung.

10. Revelation 13:1 Hunt for a monstrous beast
Verse routeRevelation 13:1 And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. [kjv]

The Greek word for "beast" appears many times in Revelation 13 and throughout Revelation. This double usage of the same word is similar to the idea that a hunted animal might be a "deer" (noun) and saying that one is going to "deer" (verb). One might "fish" to catch a "fish". The Greek word for "beast" can be a play on words with the Greek word for "door".

In Revelation, the TR (Textus Receptus) changes the parts of speech in many places which can change the meaning of the text.

11. Door and hunted beast
Door and hunt
Consider the following word comparisons as play on words.
Today, these words are pronounced in modern Greek such that they sound the same. However, in ancient Greece, there must have been some distinction in the way the vowels "η" and "υ" were pronounced.

12. Diminutive: beast
The diminutive form of beast is used in most places in Revelation. The use of the diminutive form appears to indicate that these "beasts" are not the main "beast" but representatives of the main "beast".

14. Revelation 17:3 Woman rides the beast

In Revelation 17, a woman rides the beast. This is the basis of the book A woman rides the beast, written by Dave Hunt. It was is available as a PDF (Portable Document Format) on the Internet. (as of 2024-10-31)

The book has a lot of interesting research and conjectures, even if some of the conclusions are not accepted.

15. Folk etymology: panther
A folk etymology is that the ancient Greek word "πάνθηρ""panther" comes from the ancient Greek word "πᾰν""all", as in "pandemic" and the ancient Greek word "θήρ""beast" or the ancient Greek word "θήρα""hunt".

16. The panther as an all-beast
Book: A woman rides the beast

The English word "pather" comes, through French, from the Latin word "panthere""panther" which is from the ancient Greek word "πάνθηρ""panther" and may be related to the Sanskrit word "पुण्डरीक" (pundanka) ≈ "tiger".

In ancient Greece, the "panther" was a mythical beast - appearing as a big cat with multiple colors. The "panther" was believed to be ridden (as a horse) by the god Dionysus, the Greek god of wine who in Roman culture was Bacchus. A lot of mystical writings have been attributed to Dionysus.

17. Acts 17:34 Dionysus

Verse routeDionisius Ariopagita … [v]
Verse routeDionysiussenatour … [ty]

The Greek god Dionysus is not in the Bible but a Greek by that name is mentioned in Acts 17:34 as an assemblyman, somewhat similar to a Roman senator (who, after Caesar, had no real power and were there mostly for appearance). Tyndale uses the word "senatour" to describe his position.

The Roman god Bacchus corresponds the Greek god Dionysus. Some make the connect of Bacchus to Hebrew Bar Cush is in "Son of Cush" or Nimrod from Genesis before/during/after the Tower of Babel.

Verse routeγεννηματα εχιδνων πως δυνασθε αγαθα λαλειν πονηροι οντες εκ γαρ του περισσευματος της καρδιας το στομα λαλει [gnt]

The ancient Greek word "ἔχιδνα""snake, treacherous person" and comes from "ἔχις""snake, adder, viper".
A usual Greek word for a generic "snake" or "serpent" is not used here. The Greek word used refers to a dangerous snake that could be a poisonous snake or a constricting snake. The same word is used for the snake that latches onto Paul in Acts 28 on the shore after the ship wrecks.

Which better describes the religious establishment of that day? Would it be a poisonous snake or a constricting snake (or both)? What about today?

Don't even think of doubting here! Move this mountain Divide into two parts
The KJV uses "doubt" but the Greek word is "discern" as in "through division". Does this make sense?
That is, "If you do not discern, you can do this...". You better be careful. If you do not "discern" you might do something that may not be good. Might this happen if your faith is lacking? What if you "over-think" it?

36. Constantine and Rome
Move this empire

If Constantine (and Rome) did not divide, as "through division" or "discernment", translated "doubt" in the KJV, into east and west, that entire "mountain" could have been moved into the "sea".

Most empires are taken over by another stronger empire. Rome is a conspicuous exception. This was predicted by Daniel in several prophecies. The most familiar is the dream and golden statue that led to the fiery furnace.

38. Revelation 13:1 Sand
Verse routeRevelation 13:1 And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. [kjv]

The Byzantine Greek has "on" "the sand".

The ancient Greek word "ἄμμος""sand". The Greek word for "sand" is used only three times by Jesus (or via John) in the GNT (Greek New Testament), once in the "house" built on "sand" at the end of the Sermon on the Mount and twice in Revelation. Might they be related? Might this "sand" have been back-patched from Revelation 20:8?

39. Mammon play on words
Mammon 1
There are a number of play on words from the ancient Greek word "μαμωνᾶς""mammon" (as used in Matthew 6:24). The Greek word comes from the ancient Hebrew/Aramaic word "ממון" (mamon) ≈ "confidence in one's own abilities, money"

40. Revelation 20:8
Verse routeRevelation 20:8 And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea. [kjv]

Both "Gog" and "Magog" are part of the end-times prophecy of Ezekiel in Ezekiel 38-39.

Crown
The ancient Greek word "στέφανος""that which encircles, surrounds, crown" and comes from the ancient Greek word "στέφω""encircle, put around". This is not the Greek word used here.
The KJV translates as "crowns" the Greek word that means "headband" as in the crowns worn by Persian kings. In the LXX (Septuagint) there are three uses in Esther as the crown of a Persian king and several in Isaiah.

43. Strongs - headband
*G1238 *3 διάδημα (dee-ad'-ay-mah) : from a compound of G1223 and G1210; a "diadem" (as bound about the head):--crown. Compare G4735.
Word usage per chapter Words: διαδηματα=3

All three uses of this word in the GNT are in Revelation. The word appears several times in the book of Esther in the LXX.

The modern Greek word "κεφαλή" (keh-fa-LEE) ≈ "head, heading".

46. Strongs - head

The Greek word for "horns" is used by Jesus to refer to "rules" as in "tittles", literally "little horns", of the "law".

The Greek word for "ten" is part of a play on words of the word for "accept" as in "accepting" Jesus, and reminds one of the "ten" commandments. This word for "ten" thus fits into the TenWordPin model.

Does the order make a difference?

50. Revelation 13:1 Horns with headbands
Verse routeRevelation 13:1 And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. [kjv]

The "horns" have "crowns" or "headbands". What is the relationship?

51. Revelation 13:1 Heads with names of blasphemy
Verse routeRevelation 13:1 And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. [kjv]

The TR changes the plural "names" in the Greek to the singular "name". Does that make a difference? The "heads" have "names" of "blasphemy". What is the relationship? What is "blasphemy"?

52. Strongs - blasphemy
*G988 *18 βλασφημία (blas-fay-me'-ah) : from G989; vilification (especially against God):--blasphemy, evil speaking, railing.
Word usage per chapter Words: βλασφημια=4 βλασφημιαι=3 βλασφημιαν=3 βλασφημιας=8

The ancient Greek word "βλασφημία""word of evil omen, defamation, speech against God" and comes from the words for "bad" or "harmful" and "speak" or "fame" (as in traveling news). In deceptive uses, "blasphemy" may sound eloquent and indistinguishable by some from the truth.

This word for "blasphemy" can be a play on words with "plant" or "vegetation". The "weeds" or "tares" are "planted" by the "evil one" or the "birds".

Planted and blasphemy

Planted and blasphemy For rent - clothes
Clothing was expensive.
Sometimes the high priest sometimes had to rent his "clothes". In modern times, the idea of "renting" clothes would be similar to someone (e.g., a coach mad at a call) throwing down his cell phone.

Deciding whether to call someone to rent clothes might be considered a close call!
