Luke 10:1-4 Follow the leader
1. Luke 10:1-4 Follow the leader
Luke 10:3 Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves. [kjv]
10:4 Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way. [kjv]
Here we look at some remarks about Jesus that pastors make from time to time. Sometimes, it appears those remarks are made to help contributions to the church to improve the "
bottom line". It is not clear of the remarks are made out of "
ignorance" or for the purposes of "
deception". Does it matter?
Let us investigate. Keep in mind that the best deceptions do not use false facts. The best deceptions present only some true facts and leave other true facts omitted.
2. Selective evidence fallacy: Cherry picking
In Biblical issues, the primary way for someone to deceive is to "
cherry-pick" verses out of context and piece them together to support the desired point of view - which is often not the view of God as expressed by scripture.
Be aware of verses skipped, verses "
cherry-picked" from various contexts that may be out of context, etc. When Satan tempts Jesus, Satan uses scripture out of context. Jesus answers and refutes Satan with scripture in context.
The use of "
cherry-picked" is sometimes called "
suppressed evidence" or "
incomplete evidence". Whatever it is called, it encourages what is called "
confirmation bias" and, as a result, a "
faulty generalization" or "
hasty generalization".
3. God's word
Learning God's Word is very important. Be careful that you do not pick and choose, or "
cherry pick", what parts of God's word you learn.
Deception is
not usually done with
false facts. Deception is usually done by presenting
selective facts.
What
Bible translation is being used in church services? A red flag is that versions are switched to support the opinion of the pastor and/or no indication is provided to the congregation of which version is being used.
How best to learn God's word: Grow Group, Sunday Camp, etc.
4. Luke 10:1
5. Luke 10:1
KJV: After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come.
6. Luke 10:2
Luke 10:2 Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest. [kjv]
What did Jesus say and/or mean?
Send forth "leaders" into his harvest.
Send forth "managers" into his harvest.
Send forth "servants" into his harvest.
Send forth "workers" into his harvest.
How about "
I am a worker for the Kingdom of God" or "
I am a worker for Jesus"?
7. Follow the leader
Matthew 4:19 And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. [kjv]
What is translated as "
follow me" is, in the Greek, "
come behind me". Jesus does not call us to be "
leaders" in the human sense. We are to "
do" what Jesus wants us to "
do". Are we "
leaders" of men or "
fishers" of men?
Church as the universal collection of believers
Local church as local collection of believers
The word "
leader" is ambiguous. In a human context, a "
leader" is someone who fits into a human system to do what the person in charge wants. If you fit into that system, for a good or bad system, you are called a "
leader".
8. Matthew 4:19
KJV: And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.
9. Rock and sand
Build your house on the granite
rock of Jesus and not on the human sand (or stones) of man, Matthew 7:24-27. Sand is a chip off the old block of granite and made in the image of granite.
Church of believers built on the rock of Christ .
Church of believers built on the sand of man .
The higher one goes up the human
sand hierarchy or
sand tree, the more the temptation to ignore the foundation of the
rock and to start to "
influence" or "
manipulate" others as "
leaders" for one's own purposes.
To the extent that the Church of believers built on the sand of man helps one do what Jesus wants them to do, it is good. To the extent it does not, it is not good.
Some
birds will make "
stones" (sand on which to build their birdhouse) appear as "
bread". That is, give "
bad" "
gifts" or "
houses" to their "
children".
10. Luke 10:2
KJV: Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.
11. Matthew 28:19-20 The Great Mandate
Matthew 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: [kjv]
28:20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. [kjv]
Matthew ends with "
The Great Commission" and uses the Latin word
"mandani" ≈ "commanded" as in "
mandate". The Greek translated as "
nations" is that of "
people".
Jesus does not call you to be a "leader" in the human organization sense - where part of "leadership" is to "follow the leader" and to "influence" others through dubious "manipulation".
Jesus does not call you to be a "friend" first where one tries to use "friendship" to "influence" others.
As you go through life, you should "
teach" others what Jesus wants you to teach them.
Star Trek:
.. to go where no man has gone before .... Jesus does
not want you to do what is said in Star Trek. Jesus wants you
... to go where men have gone before - and give them the Good News ....
12. Matthew 28:19 Trinity
Matthew 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: [kjv]
euntes … docete … gentes … [v]
This is one place where all three parts of the "
Trinity" are explicitly mentioned.
13. Go your way
Luke 10:3 Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves. [kjv]
Jesus warns of two types of "
wolves".
Outside attack: Those outside the church (not the primary threat).
Inside attack: Those inside the church as in a "sheep dog" who "misinterprets" or a "wolf dog" (in disguise) who deceives.
Matthew 7:15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. [kjv]
Any "
sheep dog" that is a "
wolf dog" will, to maintain their influence, accuse any "
sheep" who questions the "
wolf dog" of being a "
wolf dog". In psychology, this is called "
projection" where you accuse someone else of what you are doing (and trying to hide)
14. Luke 10:3
KJV: Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves.
15. Matthew 7:15
KJV: Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
16. Matthew 7:21,23
Matthew 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. [kjv]
7:23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. [kjv]
The Greek for "
iniquity" is that of going "
against the law". That is, "
against the law" of God.
What are God's laws?
How would one go against them?
17. Matthew 7:21
KJV: Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
18. Matthew 7:23
KJV: And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
19. Both love your God and love your neighbor as yourself needed
Jesus clearly states the two laws on which the law and the prophets hang in Mark 12:30-31 (and elsewhere).
Law/Pearl 1: Love God (and the rules of God).
Law/Pearl 2: Love your neighbor as yourself.
The religious establishment at the time of Jesus emphasized law 1, "Love your God", but ignored law 2, "Love your neighbor as yourself" rule. This is, literally, "against the law" (of God).
According to Jesus, both rules are needed. What happens if the religious establishment ignores "Love your God" and emphasizes only "Love your neighbor" and often leaves out "as yourself"? This is, literally, "against the law" (of God)
20. Matthew 13:30
Matthew 13:30 Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn. [kjv]
21. Matthew 13:30
KJV: Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.
22. Matthew 13:41
Matthew 13:41 The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; [kjv]
The Greek for "offend" is that of "misinterpret" (idiom).
The Greek for "iniquity" is that of "against the law" (of God)
Paraphrase:
... shall gather out of His kingdom all that have misinterpreted what He said and all that have done things against His laws.
If one does not understand what Jesus said and meant, then one can easily do things against His laws - because the misinterpretation may make one think that what is good is not good or what is not good is good.
23. Matthew 13:42 Wailing and gnashing of teeth
Matthew 13:42 And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. [kjv]
To which of the following might "
gnashing of teeth" apply?
Those who are in pain.
Those who are angry.
Those who realize that they misinterpreted what was said.
24. Matthew 13:42
KJV: And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.
25. Matthew 13:43
Matthew 13:43 Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear. [kjv]
Have people had "
ears" listened and understood? Note that there are those who "
hear" very well but may not "
listen" well.
The ancient Greek word
"ἀκούω" ≈ "hear" and assumes understanding of what is heard. It is the source of the English word words such as
"acoustic" and is cognate with the English word
"hear" and
"harken".
26. Matthew 13:43
KJV: Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.
27. Throwing pearls build
1 Gates
2 Gates with ask
3 Gates with sheep-dog
4 Gates with wolf-dog
5 Gates with thrown pearls
6 Gates with swine
This chart build is to summarize Matthew 7.
The end result of giving what is "
holy", control of the group, to a wolf-dog and having white and then gray "
pearls" cast to "
swine" to be trodden down to become black pearls is to divide the group into "
few" and "
some". Only the "
few" who have otherwise ignored the "
wolf" will find and knock on the gate to life and have it opened.
28. Luke 10:4
Luke 10:4 Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way. [kjv]
Should you "
salute" others on the way? We are not to "
greet" the world with "
nampy pamby consensus" and "
bogus good cheer".
Should you take your "
purse", "
scrip", or "
shoes" with you? I think we should. What do you say to that?
Would you let Jesus into your church?
29. McCarthy: Teamwork
...most people's superficial notion of "teamwork" is that it is equivalent to some namby-pamby consensus and bogus good cheer. The only consensus worth having is a creative one achieved in the combat of fully engaged intellects. Such a consensus is born of sleepless nights, fear of rejection, and trials of personal courage. Conflict, which usually presages growth, is the hallmark of such consensus. McCarthy, J. (1995).
Dynamics of Software Development. Redmond, WA: Microsoft Press., p. 44.
Sometimes this idea of ignoring conflict is called a "
mutual admiration society".
The "
peer-review" system used in many academic areas falls prey to the idea of a "
mutual admiration society". Any really new or useful idea tends not be seen by those in such a group.
The term "
group think" can apply to such groups.
30. Luke 10:4
KJV: Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way.
31. Carrying purse and scrip
Luke 10:4 Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way. [kjv]
22:35 And he said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing. [kjv]
22:36 Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one. [kjv]
Before the arrest and crucifixion, Jesus changes the earlier-stated requirements.
How many times have you heard Luke 10:4 stated in a sermon?
How many times have you then heard Luke 22:36 stated in that sermon?
Discuss: Is it deceptive to make a claim using one verse and omit telling people about the later verse that reverses the earlier verse?
32. Buy a sword
Luke 22:36 Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one. [kjv]
Why might we need a "
sword"? Is the "
sword" more than reality "
truth"?
What might it mean to "
sell" one's "
garment" to "
buy" a "
sword"?
We still do not need "
shoes". Why might that be the case?

Details are left as a future topic.

33. Salute no man
Luke 10:4 Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way. [kjv]
What does it mean to "
salute no man" on the way? Since one must "
greet" those to whom one is going, one should not get side-tracked on the way.
The ancient Greek word
"σπαθι" ≈ "loom blade, sword edge". The Greek for "
salute" or "
greet" may be a play on words with the negation of the word for "
sword edge". That is, "
no sword to any man on the way". This requires a meaning of the word "
sword" as in "
flaming sword".

39. Follow-on deception
I have seen a not uncommon follow-on deception more times than I think necessary. Without covering the second Luke reference that undoes the first verses, the pastor then segues to the feeding of the large crowd where the disciples do not know what to do. To make this segue work, the feeding fitting the scenario is needed. (below).
Having set up this scenario, a verse may be added about feeding the hungry. A campaign is then announced, with a leader and sub-leaders and goals to raise money for some charity to feed the poor - and sometimes that charity is not even Christian based.

KJV: Philip answered him, Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may take a little.

47. John 6:10-11
John 6:10 And Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand. [kjv]
6:11 And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would. [kjv]
48. John 6:10
KJV: And Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand.

50. John 6:12-13
John 6:12 When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost. [kjv]
6:13 Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten. [kjv]
What would you say if someone said that if the people were fed and then rejected the message, one should go elsewhere and not continue to feed those people? That is, they need the "
Good News" more than the food. Why waste time here? Go elsewhere.
[baskets]
Would you let Jesus into your church?
51. John 6:12
KJV: When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost.

53. John 6:14-15
John 6:14 Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world. [kjv]
6:15 When Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, he departed again into a mountain himself alone. [kjv]
First coming: Messiah and Kinsman Redeemer
Second coming: King and Avenger of Blood (many churches reject and/or omit this)
54. John 6:14
KJV: Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world.
55. John 6:15
KJV: When Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, he departed again into a mountain himself alone.
56. John 6:25-27
John 6:25 And when they had found him on the other side of the sea, they said unto him, Rabbi, when camest thou hither? [kjv]
6:26 Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled. [kjv]
6:27 Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed. [kjv]
57. John 6:25
KJV: And when they had found him on the other side of the sea, they said unto him, Rabbi, when camest thou hither?
58. John 6:26
KJV: Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled.
59. John 6:27
KJV: Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.
60. John 6 48,53
John 6:48 I am that bread of life. [kjv]
Later in the same chapter, Jesus explains what he is all about.
6:53 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. [kjv]
Today, many churches do not like the idea or
metaphor of eating the flesh and drinking his blood. Might what Jesus says be a
code word approach?
Many have noted that the modern music in many churches has been used to get Jesus and the blood out of the church service and, in some cases, the church itself.
61. John 6:48
KJV: I am that bread of life.
62. John 6:53
KJV: Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.
63. John 6
John 6:59 These things said he in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum. [kjv]
6:60 Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is an hard saying; who can hear it? [kjv]
6:66 From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him. [kjv]
6:67 Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away? [kjv]
When Jesus explained what he was really about, and the need to drink his "
blood" and eat his "
flesh", he lost disciples.
In modern times, might taking the "
blood" and "
flesh" out of the church and sermons help attendance?
64. John 6:59
KJV: These things said he in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum.
65. John 6:60
KJV: Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is an hard saying; who can hear it?
66. John 6:66
KJV: From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.
67. John 6:67
KJV: Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away?
68. Some modern churches
Many churches bend over backwards to take Jesus, the blood, etc., out of the church service and out of the church.
69. Common strategy
Many church-based colleges have changed names and beliefs to fit the modern culture.
Many churches have taken Jesus out of the church to fit the modern culture.
Common strategy used by many churches:
Select Bible verses to support the pastor's view.
Convince the sheep (who know better) that they are getting older and out of touch with culture.
Culture has changed and the church needs to adapt.
Provide (often illogical) reasons why the old was not good and the new is better.
Emphasize loving others, leaving out the "as ourself" and ignore any rule of God that may impact "loving others".
[Texas church]
70. Love is the only way
The ancient Greek word
"αγάπη" ≈ "totally devoted to, love" from which we get the word
"agape".
The difference between "
God is love" and "
Love is god" can be subtle and deceptive - especially when spoken without the distinction between the one and only creator "
God" and a "
god" as in an idol or a desire.
This fallacy is common, covered extensively by Aristotle, and called the
converse fallacy as one of many names describing it.
71. Influence
Matthew 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: [kjv]
We are to "
teach" others. We are not asked to "
influence" others in the human sense of "
manipulation" where the ends justify the means. This has happened throughout history.
This starts at home and in the neighborhood but there is no geographical limit to this commandment. Traditionally, churches sent and/or supported missionaries to help do this. When was the last time you heard about missionaries from your church and what they have done?
72. Influence
The idea of "
influence" is that of "
manipulation". This is done in the marketing field. We are not trying to "
influence" or "
manipulate" others. The word "
influence" is what is called a "
loaded word".
At some point, one starts to hear what is called a
multi-level marketing scheme where people are mesmerized into following the leader in selling whatever it is that the leader wants sold and using whatever methods will work to sell it.
2 Peter 2:3 And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not. [kjv]
73. 2 Peter 2:3
KJV: And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.
74. We are the church
75. Communication sequence
1 Say
2 Deceive
3 Misinterpret
A "
false Christ" is not just someone who says "
I am Christ. Do this.". Someone who says "
Christ says to do this" is functionally equivalent to someone who says "
I am Christ. Do this.". The Greek word translated as "
glory" has a meaning of "
opinion". Giving "
glory" to God means deferring one's own opinion to the opinion of God. Taking glory from God means substituting one's own opinion for God's opinion. One way to do this is to change the Bible to fit one's own opinion.
76. Comparison
There is little functional difference between the two scenarios.
wolf dog deliberately deceiving
sheep dog deceiving by misinterpretation
Jesus warns of this in Matthew 11:6. In the next chapter, Matthew 12, Jesus warns of "
idle words" that, for whatever reason, do not "
work for Christ". In a top-down manner this is connected to the "
unpardonable sin" and Jesus states a decision procedure to separate the above two, functionally similar, scenarios.
77. False teaching as poison
Talking about false teachers, early church father
Ignatius writes the following to the
Trallians (part 6.2, underlining added).
The Greek for "
unsuspecting" is "
ignorant". One needs to study the truth to not be "
ignorant".
English: ... these people, while pretending to be trustworthy, mix Jesus Christ with themselves - like those who administer a deadly drug with honeyed wine, which the unsuspecting victim accepts without fear and so with final pleasure drinks down death. Holmes, M. (2007). The Apostolic Fathers. 3rd Ed. Grand Rapids, MI: Baker Academic, p. 219.
What is the
functional difference between the following?
Someone who says "I am Christ. Do this." (false Christ).
Someone who says "I represent Christ. Christ says to do this.".
78. Puffed up with pride
After warning about the poison of false teachers, Ignatius tells the Trallians in the very next line that being puffed up with pride makes one susceptible to such false teachers (part 7.1).
English: Therefore be on your guard against such people. And you will be provided that you are not puffed up with pride ...
Holmes, M. (2007).
The Apostolic Fathers. 3rd Ed. Grand Rapids, MI: Baker Academic, p. 208.
Such prideful people think (know) that they know the answers without even checking to verify them. They will proclaim "
I am" followed by assertions or oaths of their self-exalted position.
Proverbs 25:2 It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter. [kjv]
79. Revelation 3:20 Jesus at the door
Revelation 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. [kjv]
Some churches only allow the part of Jesus they like into their church. The church at
Laodicia appears to not want Jesus in their church. Jesus is at the church door knocking.
Have some churches today "separated" or "uprooted" themselves from (the love of) Jesus?
Are some churches today "strangers" to Jesus?
Are some churches today "blind" to the true and complete Jesus?
Might those in this church be too busy "
ministering" to
others and not "
examining" or "
thinking" about the entirety of Jesus?
The "
hear" in Greek has a connotation of hearing with understanding. The Greek for "
voice" is, literally, "
light" into the "
mind" and can be a play on words with "
murders".
