Matthew 19:1-12 Joined together
1. Matthew 19:1-12 Joined together
2. Matthew 17 Mountains of taxes
3. Matthew 18 Greatest and least in the kingdom
4. Matthew 19:1 Context
Matthew 19:1 And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these sayings, he departed from Galilee, and came into the coasts of Judaea beyond Jordan; [kjv]
και εγενετο οτε ετελεσεν ο ιησους τους λογους τουτους μετηρεν απο της γαλιλαιας και ηλθεν εις τα ορια της ιουδαιας περαν του ιορδανου [gnt]
The "
sayings" or "
reasonings" that were finished were the subject of the end of Matthew 17 through the end of Matthew 18.
The Greek words for
"region" and
"mountain" are the same.
(smooth breathing) "ὄρος" ≈ "mountain".
(rough breathing) "ὅρος" ≈ "boundary, definition".
Note: The meaning is not determined by the breathing marks. The breathing marks were added to fit the decided meaning.
5. New Testament Greek: B. G. McClean
Note that any play on word meanings would ignore any such artificial aspiration, such as
"mountain" and
"definition".
(smooth breathing) "ὄρος" ≈ "mountain".
(rough breathing) "ὅρος" ≈ "boundary, definition".
Note: The meaning is not determined by the breathing marks. The breathing marks were added to fit the decided meaning.
The rough breathing mark was used to indicate aspiration in Attic (Athenian) Greek ... The other main dialects of Greek, namely Ionic, Doric, and Aeolic, never employed aspiration. In fact, all aspiration in Greek died out prior to the first century AD. Therefore, there is no good reason to continue using these breathing marks in modern editions of the Greek New Testament. (p. 20-21)
From a historical perspective, it is clear that the addition of breathing marks to the Greek New Testament does [sic] is artificial. (p. 21)
6. Matthew 17:1 Disambiguation
Matthew 17:1 And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart, [kjv]
και μεθ ημερας εξ παραλαμβανει ο ιησους τον πετρον και ιακωβον και ιωαννην τον αδελφον αυτου και αναφερει αυτους εις ορος υψηλον κατ ιδιαν [gnt]
If the context cannot by itself be used to determine whether the word refers to a
"mountain" or a (flat)
"region" or
"coast", some context needs to be added to make the passage clear. Consider the following.
... brought them to a region by themselves.
... brought them to a mountain by themselves.
Which meaning is to be used? Now add a disambiguating word.
... brought them to a high region by themselves.
... brought them to a high mountain by themselves.
Which one of the meanings now fit? Which does not fit? What implications does this have for those who make a theological distinction about the
"mountain" being "
high"?
The
KJV (King James Version) translates as "
apart" the Greek word that means "
by themselves".

Matthew 13:53 And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these parables, he departed thence. [kjv]
και εγενετο οτε ετελεσεν ο ιησους τας παραβολας ταυτας μετηρεν εκειθεν [gnt]
This is the only other verse in the
GNT (Greek New Testament) where the Greek word for "
withdrew" is used. This was after the Kingdom Parables of Matthew 13.
11. Matthew 13:53
KJV: And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these parables, he departed thence.
Greek: και εγενετο οτε ετελεσεν ο ιησους τας παραβολας ταυτας μετηρεν εκειθεν
12. Matthew 19:1
KJV: And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these sayings, he departed from Galilee, and came into the coasts of Judaea beyond Jordan;
Greek: και εγενετο οτε ετελεσεν ο ιησους τους λογους τουτους μετηρεν απο της γαλιλαιας και ηλθεν εις τα ορια της ιουδαιας περαν του ιορδανου
13. Matthew 19:2 Waiting on crowds
14. Matthew 19:2
KJV: And great multitudes followed him; and he healed them there.
Greek: και ηκολουθησαν αυτω οχλοι πολλοι και εθεραπευσεν αυτους εκει
15. Matthew 19:3
Matthew 19:3 The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause? [kjv]
και προσηλθαν προσηλθον αυτω φαρισαιοι πειραζοντες αυτον και λεγοντες ει εξεστιν απολυσαι την γυναικα αυτου κατα πασαν αιτιαν [gnt]
The ancient Greek word
"πειράζω" ≈ "examine" and is often translated in the
KJV as
"tempt".
16. Peirastic
On page 2, Schreiber elaborates on
"peirastic" reasoning as distinguished by Aristotle.
... he (Aristotle) distinguishes another type of reasoning called "peirastic" (πειραστικός) or examinational reasoning. Peirastic proceeds from some belief of the person being examined. ... (1) it must be believed by the person being examined ... and (2) it need not be an endoxon (i.e., it may be an entirely idiosyncratic belief) ...
Aristotle's clarification of the word fits the
"temptations" of Jesus in the Gospels. The ancient Greek word
"πειράζω" ≈ "examine" and is often translated in the
KJV as
"tempt". The modern idea of the Greek
"temptation" is that of an interview where one examines someone about things they know or believe they know.
17. Matthew 19:3
KJV: The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?
Greek: και προσηλθαν προσηλθον αυτω οι φαρισαιοι πειραζοντες αυτον και λεγοντες αυτω ει εξεστιν ανθρωπω απολυσαι την γυναικα αυτου κατα πασαν αιτιαν
18. Matthew 19:1-12 Joined together
In Matthew 19, the Pharisees
"examine" Jesus.
Matthew 19:4 And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, [kjv]
19:5 And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? [kjv]
19:6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. [kjv]
Many of these topics were covered by Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount.
Jesus continues about "
divorce", "
eunuchs", etc.
19. Created
Matthew 19:4 And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, [kjv]
ο δε αποκριθεις ειπεν ουκ ανεγνωτε οτι ο κτισας απ αρχης αρσεν και θηλυ εποιησεν αυτους [gnt]
The
TR (Textus Receptus) uses the word
"made". The Greek word is that of "
having created" (a created creature).
"ποιέω" ≈ "make, do" and is the source of the English word "poet" as someone who makes things with words.

22. Matthew 19:4 Male and female
|
Some in the culture have trouble determining the difference between "male" and "female".
|
In the beginning, the gene pool was not contaminated. Mutations after that could, in certain cases, muddy the waters. Note that in order to answer a question, Jesus (and others) must "
judge" since that Greek word is the root word of the word for "
answer".
23. Matthew 19:5 Glued together
Matthew 19:5 And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? [kjv]
και ειπεν ενεκα τουτου καταλειψει ανθρωπος τον πατερα και την μητερα και κολληθησεται τη γυναικι αυτου και εσονται οι δυο εις σαρκα μιαν [gnt]
The ancient Greek word
"κόλλα" ≈ "glue, flower paste". The
KJV translates as
"cleave" the Greek word that means
"joined" as in
"glued". Some use the English word
"cling" for "
cleave". Barnabas makes the observation that one should not be
"glued" to "
sinners". Some translators, having the effect of providing reasons not to accept Barnabas, translate the word
"glued" as "
associate".
Do not be "glued" to "sinners" (Barnabas)
Do not "associate" with "sinners" (some translators)
The English word
"cleave" comes from the Middle English word
"cleven" ≈ "cleave, split" but
could mean
"adhere",
"cling",
"stick fast", etc.
24. Barnabas: Behavior of birds
English: Neither shall you eat the eagle or the hawk or the kite or the crow. You must not, he means, associate or even resemble such people, who do not know how to provide food for themselves by labor and sweat but lawlessly plunder other people's property; indeed, though they walk about with the appearance of innocence, they are carefully watching and looking around for someone to rob in their greed, just as these birds alone do not provide food for themselves but sit idle and look for ways to eat the flesh of others - they are nothing more than pests in their wickedness. (10.4, Holmes, p. 411)
Barnabas makes the case that the Jews changed the "
moral" laws given by God to
Moses into "
dietary" laws to circumvent what God wanted. The word "
associate" is the Greek word for "
glued to" or "
joined together", the same word Jesus uses for husband and wife becoming "
one flesh".
The ancient Greek word
"κόλλα" ≈ "glue, flower paste".
The translation is that one should not
"associate" with such people. The Greek is that of
"glue yourself" to such people.
25. Matthew 19:6
Matthew 19:6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. [kjv]
ωστε ουκετι εισιν δυο αλλα σαρξ μια ο ουν ο θεος συνεζευξεν ανθρωπος μη χωριζετω [gnt]
The "
one" may have a special meaning as, reflexively, "
you" by way of the
one cookie rule.
The ancient Greek word
"χωρίζω" ≈ "separate, divide, distinguish" and is the source of the English word
"horizen" and is related to the Greek word for
"mountain". The Greek word is from
"χωρίς" ≈ "separately, differently" or, as a preposition, "
without" or "
otherwise".
The Greek word for "
joined" is that of, literally, "
together yoked". The Greek word for "
yoked" is, literally, "
two going (together)".

30. Matthew 19:6 Joining and separating
Discuss:
What "man" or "bird" would try to "separate" a "woman" or "wife" from her "man" or "husband"?
What "man" or "bird" would try to "separate" the "bride" or "church" from her "groom" or "Jesus"?
What might be the connection between these two ideas? That was the subject of the previous discourse in Matthew 18.
The Greek word for
"asunder" is from and has the
Greek word for
"mountain" in it. The example used in the previous chapter was of a "
sheep" going "
on" the "
mountain" or
"definition" to be
"great".
Idea pairs:
Same idea: "join", "glue", "bind", "receive" or "accept"
Same idea: "separate", "loose", "cut off", "pluck out"
32. Matthew 19:4
KJV: And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,
Greek: ο δε αποκριθεις ειπεν αυτοις ουκ ανεγνωτε οτι ο ποιησας κτισας απ αρχης αρσεν και θηλυ εποιησεν αυτους
33. Matthew 19:5
KJV: And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?
Greek: και ειπεν ενεκεν ενεκα τουτου καταλειψει ανθρωπος τον πατερα και την μητερα και προσκολληθησεται κολληθησεται τη γυναικι αυτου και εσονται οι δυο εις σαρκα μιαν
34. Matthew 19:6
KJV: Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
Greek: ωστε ουκετι εισιν δυο αλλα σαρξ μια ο ουν ο θεος συνεζευξεν ανθρωπος μη χωριζετω
35. Matthew 19:7-8 Hardness of divorce
Matthew 19:7 They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away? [kjv]
λεγουσιν αυτω τι ουν μωυσης ενετειλατο δουναι βιβλιον αποστασιου και απολυσαι [gnt]
19:8 He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so. [kjv]
λεγει αυτοις οτι μωυσης προς την σκληροκαρδιαν υμων επετρεψεν υμιν απολυσαι τας γυναικας υμων απ αρχης δε ου γεγονεν ουτως [gnt]
The Greek for
"hardness of the heart" is one word in Greek. The ancient Greek word
"σκληρός" ≈ "hard, harsh" as in a
"hard" heart and is the source of the English word
"arteriosclerosis" as a "
hardening of the arteries".
36. Matthew 19:7
KJV: They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away?
Greek: λεγουσιν αυτω τι ουν μωσης μωυσης ενετειλατο δουναι βιβλιον αποστασιου και απολυσαι αυτην
37. Matthew 19:8
KJV: He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.
Greek: λεγει αυτοις οτι μωσης μωυσης προς την σκληροκαρδιαν υμων επετρεψεν υμιν απολυσαι τας γυναικας υμων απ αρχης δε ου γεγονεν ουτως
38. Matthew 19:9 But I say unto you
Matthew 19:9 And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery. [kjv]
λεγω δε υμιν οτι ος αν απολυση την γυναικα αυτου μη επι πορνεια και γαμηση αλλην μοιχαται [gnt]
The "
I say unto you" appears to, in most if not all places, indicate that the next statement has a more literal meaning and another meaning that is the intended meaning.
Matthew 5: Jesus was talking to disciples (on the mountain)
Matthew 19: Jesus was answering a question posed by the religious elite (in public)
The Greek word for "
fornication", as used by Jesus, has a more general meaning.
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus phrased it as the "
reasoning" of "
fornication". In this context, responding to a direct question of the religious elite, it is just "
fornication". Jesus is speaking to those who would be the primary ones to use the "
reasoning" of "
fornication".
39. Matthew 19:9
KJV: And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.
Greek: λεγω δε υμιν οτι ος αν απολυση την γυναικα αυτου ει μη επι πορνεια και γαμηση αλλην μοιχαται και ο απολελυμενην γαμησας μοιχαται
40. Matthew 19:10
Matthew 19:10 His disciples say unto him, If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry. [kjv]
λεγουσιν αυτω οι μαθηται ει ουτως εστιν η αιτια του ανθρωπου μετα της γυναικος ου συμφερει γαμησαι [gnt]
When the disciples do not really understand what Jesus is saying, they tend to ask somewhat strange questions that Jesus then answers.
The
KJV translates as "
good" the Greek word that means "
bring together" and is an example of a counter-factual question.
The disciples are asking a question based on the perceived literal meaning of (part of) what Jesus said.

"carry together".
43. Matthew 19:10
KJV: His disciples say unto him, If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry.

When the disciples ask questions but do not really understand the
true meaning, Jesus often provides some enigmatic answers (next verse).

The ancient Greek word
"πᾶς" ≈ "all, every".
In the
singular, it is "
each", "
every", "
all" of the domain that fits the
context. That would be every man that exists.
In the
plural, as used here, this would be as a "
complete" unit. This would be as all of mankind in general with possible exceptions.

Nobody goes there. It's too crowded.
46. Matthew 19:11
KJV: But he said unto them, All men cannot receive this saying, save they to whom it is given.
Greek: ο δε ειπεν αυτοις ου παντες χωρουσιν τον λογον τουτον αλλ οις δεδοται
47. Matthew 19:11 Receive
Matthew 19:11 But he said unto them, All men cannot receive this saying, save they to whom it is given. [kjv]
ο δε ειπεν αυτοις ου παντες χωρουσιν τον λογον αλλ οις δεδοται [gnt]
The Greek translated as "
saying" is that of "
reasoning".
When the disciples do not understand and ask a question, Jesus provides an enigmatic answer which theologians, pastors, etc., then try to make doctrine.
Does Jesus mean that some do not "understand" or "receive" the extended "meaning" of what was said?
Does Jesus say that if it is "given" to you, then you can "understand" it? That is, to those who do not entrap or deceive themselves about what Jesus has said.

Words: χωρει χωρειν=2 χωρειτω=1 χωρησαι χωρησατε χωρουσαι χωρουσιν=1
|
The ancient Greek word
"χωρέω" ≈ "give ground, give way".
The Latin word
"capio" ≈ "take, capture, seize"
50. Matthew 19:11 Give way
Matthew 19:11 But he said unto them, All men cannot receive this saying, save they to whom it is given. [kjv]
ο δε ειπεν αυτοις ου παντες χωρουσιν τον λογον αλλ οις δεδοται [gnt]
The ancient Greek word
"χωρέω" ≈ "give ground, give way".
☐
All cannot give ground to this saying.
☐
All cannot give way to this saying.
Since the translators (and later commentators, pastors, etc.) could not
"give way" to this saying (separate literal from intended meaning), they came up with the word "
receive" or "
accept" to fit their literal interpretation. This then goes into the Bible dictionaries as the actual meaning intended by Jesus.
A play on words may be with the ancient Greek word
"χωρίζω" ≈ "separate, divide, distinguish" and is the source of the English word
"horizen". This word was used in Matthew 19:6 (5 verses earlier).
☐
All cannot separate this saying (literal from intended meaning).
51. Matthew 19:12 Eunuchs
Matthew 19:12 For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother's womb: and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it. [kjv]
εισιν γαρ ευνουχοι οιτινες εκ κοιλιας μητρος εγεννηθησαν ουτως και εισιν ευνουχοι οιτινες ευνουχισθησαν υπο των ανθρωπων και εισιν ευνουχοι οιτινες ευνουχισαν εαυτους δια την βασιλειαν των ουρανων ο δυναμενος χωρειν χωρειτω [gnt]
The
eunuchs appear to be of three sources.
nature (from the mother)
nurture (learned from men)
combination (both from self)
If Jesus had meant physical and literal
eunuchs, then, in the limit of everyone following that advice, the entire world would cease to exist in 120 years.
Note: UNIX is an operation system on which the play on words with
eunuchs is often made. Linus Torvalds rewrote the UNIX kernel and that Open Source rewrite became known as Linux.
Except for the story in Acts 8 of the Ethiopian eunuch, this is the only place where this word is used in the
GNT. Perhaps Jesus was using this word as a code word with an additional meaning using a play on words.
"εὐνοῦχος" ≈ "overseer of a harem, eunuch" and, in Christian theology, a person who abstains from sexual relations.
"εὐ" ≈ "good" (prefix) and "νοῦ" ≈ "mind" and "χοι" ≈ "dust, soil, earth".
Using the deeper meaning of what Jesus means, this may refer to a person who abstains from deceptions, seductions, etc., of the believers (sheep) of the body of Christ.
54. Strongs - eunuchs
- *G2135 *8 εὐνοῦχος (yoo-noo'-khos) : from eune (a bed) and G2192; a castrated person (such being employed in Oriental bed-chambers); by extension an impotent or unmarried man; by implication, a chamberlain (state-officer):--eunuch.
- ευνουχος *5
- Acts 8:27 ... behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen ...
- Acts 8:34 And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray ...
- Acts 8:36 ... a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; ...
- Acts 8:38 ... both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.
- Acts 8:39 ... caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: ...
- ευνουχοι *3
