1. Merisms
The English word
"merism" comes from the ancient Greek word
"μερισμός" ≈ "partition, division" and, from 1894, is a literary device as a figure of speech that uses two extremes and
everything in between.
Search "high" and "low".
"young" and "old".
"evening" and "morning".
"confess" (incorrectly translated) and "deny"
Last "will" and "testament".
In the beginning, God created the "heaven" and the "earth".
Jesus uses the Greek word to refer to the "
cares" and "
concerns" of the "
world". That is, how everything is "
divided" or "
compartmentalized" where everyone wants to get their fair share (or more than their fair share).
A
merism is a form of
opinion, as in a
hyperbole.
2. Greek negation
Greek has a number of words for
negation.
"δε" ≈ "(but) not" as a qualified negation (but).
"μη" ≈ "not, no" with something more abstract and potential. For example, of a thought or wish.
"ου" ≈ "not, no" with something more physical and actual. For example, an objective statement of fact.
These can be combined for emphasis.
"ου μη" ≈ "no not" appears in 137 verses in the GNT (Greek New Testament). This is an emphatic negative and includes both the abstract/potential and the physical/actual.
Other uses of the double negative are usually in the logical sense where two negations make a positive.

deny" are used only

GNT. Perhaps a play on words might be intended.

"doves" or
"pigeons" (same bird) or
"birds" are
not "
harmless" in the English sense. They are without frills (insect antennas), with smooth feathers, preened of pests. not fact-checked, etc. Is this how
"birds" of "
prey" or
"pray" want to appear?

This verse relates to both the "
altar" verse back in 5:23-24 and the "
agree" with the "
adversary" verse back in verses 5:25-26.

Here are some possible meanings using play on words. The "
market place" is the "
courtyard".
With the "no" or "not": In the Temple courtyard/palace, no oaths or deals or else that seat/throne will be cutoff/burned.
Without the "no" or "not": If there are oaths or deals in the Temple courtyard/palace, that seat/throne will be cutoff/burned.
Perhaps this is a prophecy (authentication code) of what will happen to Peter in the
"courtyard" where he will
"deny" Christ with an
"oath" three times. There was "
mourning" (by Peter) but he was not "
cut off".
